Academy Award winner Charlize Theron does not want to resort to calling The Old Guard 2 bigger and better – but she assures us that it is. Speaking with Variety, Theron teased the epic scale of the upcoming Netflix sequel, revealing that The Old Guard 2 will tackle the same world in unexpected ways and take things even more global than its predecessor.

Based on the graphic novel by writer Greg Rucka, The Old Guard was released on Netflix in 2020 and follows a group of mercenaries led by Charlize Theron. But there is something unusual about this group of mercenaries, they are all centuries-old immortals with the ability to heal themselves. The first outing for what is sure to be a franchise centers on the group as they discover that someone is onto their secret, forcing them to fight to protect their freedom.

“You know, it’s so pretentious when an actor is like, ‘It’s so much bigger! It’s so much better!’ And I think you know that I’m not that person. It is pretty impressive what we did, because it felt very specific, the first time around, and we wanted to kind of like take it out of that. What we let the audience think was that set world, and we really kind of turned that on its head. So, I’m excited about that. We have a bigger cast, and it feels more global. It’s a big movie.”

The first outing, which was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, written by Greg Rucka, and stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, proved to be a major hit for the streaming giant. The first The Old Guard was already pretty epic, introducing audiences to a gang of immortals who have fought their way across time and the world. How The Old Guard 2 will up these stakes will certainly be exciting to see.

Filming has now begun on The Old Guard 2, which is all set to be directed by Victoria Mahoney (Lovecraft Country, The Morning Show) from a screenplay by Greg Rucka. The sequel will reunite the core cast of the first movie, including Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Vân Veronica Ngô, Chiwetel Ejiofor, while adding Hollywood stars Uma Thurman and Henry Golding.

Plot details for the comic book movie sequel are currently being kept under wraps, but there are some clues that we can ascertain from its comic book follow-up. The Old Guard Book Two: Force Multiplied was released back in 2020 by Image Comics, and the official synopsis reads as follows; “When you’ve waged war as long as Andy and her squad, you’ve gotten your hands more than bloody. Now, the day has come to confront the sins of the past. But as Nile struggles to make peace with the team, the last person Andy expected to ever see again returns to challenge not only what Andy believes in, but what the team is willing to fight for.”

The Old Guard 2 has not yet been given a release date, but will make its debut on Netflix.
