Following his assault in October, comedian and actor Chris Redd still has no idea who it was that attacked him, but one thing he knows for sure is that it wasn’t random. At the time, Redd had just arrived at the Comedy Cellar in New York where he was to perform stand-up that night. He didn’t even make it inside before an unidentified assailant, reportedly disguised as security, sucker punched Redd in the face and attempted to steal his necklace. Redd was able to recover the necklace, and though he was hospitalized, he was released soon after with mild but painful facial injuries.

Months later, Redd has more to say about the incident in a new interview with The Bennington Show on Sirius XM (per Deadline). He says he’s confident that the attack wasn’t “random” as it has been described, and he’s sure of that after speaking with the police and viewing the surveillance footage that shows what happened. Redd points out that the man was at the comedy club for an hour beforehand, presumably waiting for the comedian to show up so the attack could be carried out. As Redd says:

Redd went on to say that he might release the footage at some point in the future. For now, he says that the investigation into who attacked him seems to be stalled, noting that he’s been “ghosted by the Chief of police” over the incident. Having no new answers might be frustrating for Redd, but he still sees the bright side of the situation after observing that the media coverage “did wonders” for promoting his new comedy special; Redd’s special Why Am I Like This? debuted on HBO Max on Nov. 3.

The funnyman clearly hasn’t let the attack affect his sense of humor. Redd left SNL earlier this year as part of a mass exodus of cast members, but he’s kept busy with his comedy gigs and other acting roles. He played a main character in Kenan, which ended its two-season run this year, and recently guest starred on The Simpsons. Redd can also be seen in a lead role in the new Peacock series Bust Down.
