While getting slapped by Will Smith live on television wasn’t exactly a fun moment for Chris Rock, the comedian doesn’t want people feeling bad for him. Back in March, Rock had appeared at the Academy Awards ceremony as a presenter. He took some time to poke fun at the celebrities in attendance and things escalated quickly when he cracked a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hairstyle, resulting in the actress looking bemused.

Given the tremendous news coverage that it generated, most everyone is aware of what happened next. Will Smith approached Rock on the stage and smacked him across the face before heading back to his seat and shouting obscenities at the comedian, demanding that Rock never joke about Jada again. Smith wound up getting banned from all Academy events for the next decade, but he was able to escape legal trouble after Rock declined to press charges.

For the most part, Rock has stayed silent on the whole situation, though he has briefly touched on it with sporadic jokes at his comedy appearances. Per US Weekly, he opened up a bit more about how he feels when he appeared at a recent show co-headlined with Kevin Hart. He admitted that getting “punched in the face” was painful but ultimately compared the slap to a paper cut, claiming he “shook that sh*t” off and was back to normal the next day. As Rock put it:

“I don’t have a bunch of sht about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show I wrote before this weekend,” Rock had also said at a previous show shortly after the incident. “I’m still kind of processing what happened. So, at some point I’ll talk about that sht. And it will be serious and funny.”

Perhaps the reason Rock has only touched on the situation in a limited capacity is that he’s just waiting to find the biggest possible payday he can get for his comments. At another comedy show, Rock had clarified that he was okay after the slap but that he didn’t want to say much more unless he was well compensated.

“I’m okay, I have a whole show and I’m not talking about that until I get paid. Life is good. I got my hearing back,” the comedian had joked.
