Thor: Love and Thunder will feature the MCU introduction of Gorr the God Butcher, played by Academy Award-winning actor Christian Bale. While Bale is familiar with the superhero genre due to his iconic portrayal of Bruce Wayne, Love and Thunder marks his first foray into the world of Marvel. As such, it seems like Bale didn’t get the memo about keeping Marvel secrets close to the vest. In a recent interview with Prensaescenario, Bale discussed his experience collaborating with director Taika Waititi on Thor, as well as working with co-stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Tessa Thompson. Bale said the cast as a whole did a fantastic job on the film, including a few returning MCU actors that didn’t end up making the final cut:

Goldblum made his MCU debut in Thor: Ragnarok as the peculiar Grandmaster, a hedonist who ruled over Sakaar before being overthrown by its people. The Grandmaster was still alive following the events of Ragnarok, so an appearance in Love and Thunder wouldn’t have been out of the question had it stayed in the film. As for Dinklage, the actor had a key role in Avengers: Infinity War as Eitri, the King of the Dwarves on Nidavellir. Thor seeks out Eitri to forge a new weapon after Mjolnir was destroyed, leading to the creation of Stormbreaker. It’s unknown what Eitri’s role in Love and Thunder might have been, but hopefully, the cut scenes will be included with the film’s Blu-ray release.

“Taika [Waititi] really created just a really, really, really good cast… I got to work with Peter Dinklage, that’s not in the final film, but I got to work with him, he’s fantastic. I got to work with Jeff Goldblum, he’s not in the final film either. As you see, lots of stuff ends up on the cutting room floor, even though it is beautiful, brilliant stuff.”

Was Gorr Going to Kill the Grandmaster and Eitri?

     Marvel Studios

Given that Bale said he worked with both Dinklage and Goldblum on Love and Thunder, Gorr was set to meet the Grandmaster and Eitri at some point during his quest to kill all gods. While Eitri isn’t really a god, the Grandmaster is designated as one of the Elders of the Universe, which gives him a sort of god-like distinction. It’s unclear what Gorr specifically defines as a “god,” so exceptions could definitely be made depending on how the galactic killer is feeling on a given day.

Since Eitri is a weapons maker, and Gorr wields a mysterious cosmic sword, he could have gone to Eitri first to see if the dwarf could make him a god-killing weapon before discovering his own blade. Or, Gorr maybe wanted to kill anyone Thor had ever interacted with, so Eitri was part of his hit list. In all, there are plenty of possibilities for why Gorr would want to find Eitri and the Grandmaster, but they won’t be shown in Love and Thunder. Thankfully, the fourth film in the Thor franchise has a plethora of other exciting characters and returning MCU actors to make up for Dinklage and Goldblum being left out.
