Christina Applegate has always been a very welcome face everywhere she goes and in every role she takes, especially now since her Multiple Sclerosis condition has undoubtedly been challenging her in every way imaginable. However, per a report from ET Canada, she didn’t allow that to stop her from attending last night’s Critic’s Choice Awards, the first awards show’s she been to since her initial diagnosis in 2021.

Dressed in a stylish black ensemble and all smiles, Applegate made her appearance off the red carpet at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, alongside her young daughter Sadie Grace LeNoble who lovingly matched her mother’s outfit style. The actress admitted earlier on Twitter that she was very nervous about attending such a grand event for the first time since 2019, but was immensely grateful for the invitation. Ultimately, she overcame those nerves and made one of the most endearing appearances of the evening. Applegate was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her Netflix series Dead to Me, which just released its third final season on the streaming platform.

The show, a black comedy which stars both Applegate and Linda Cardellini as two grieving women who bond during therapy, received critical acclaim since its first season in 2019. The production on the third season experienced incredible challenges, due to the COVID-19 pandemic that all but halted the process, followed by Applegate’s MS diagnosis in 2021. Despite all of that, the show pressed forward and wrapped its final season with several award nominations, particularly for Applegate who also has a Best Actress nod from SAG to look forward to soon.

Christina Applegate’s Bond With Fellow Embattled Actress Selma Blair

In a very public profession which is also so physically demanding in so many ways, an MS diagnosis can be both a literal and psychological paralysis for any actor. Applegate disclosed in an earlier interview on the Kelly Clarkson Show that she was utterly terrified at what was happening to her, especially before she learned what it actually was.

Applegate found comfort and solace with her former co-star Selma Blair, who also was diagnosed with aggressive MS in late 2018, and the two have become extremely close and supportive of one another through their personal battles. The two starred together alongside Cameron Diaz in the early 2000s romantic comedy The Sweetest Thing. Said Blair of her friend:

“Shooting [‘Dead to Me’] was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life…I was diagnosed during shooting and I didn’t know what was happening to me. I couldn’t walk. They had to use a wheelchair to get me to set. I was freaking out until someone was like, ‘You need a MRI…Then I found out on a Monday after work that I had MS. A disease that I’m going to have for the rest of my life. And then I started thinking about the last four years and I had very small symptoms.”

“She has a lot on her plate. It’s a lot, but she’s as brilliant and beautiful as ever.”
