True Detective season 4 continues to round out its cast with Christopher Eccleston, John Hawkes, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, and Anna Lambe being the latest to join the HBO crime anthology series.
Academy Award winner Jodie Foster is set to headline True Detective season 4, titled Night Country, along with boxer-turned actress Kali Reis as the co-lead.
The official logline for True Detective: Night Country (via Variety) reads:
Judging by the latest cast additions, True Detective: Night Country is putting together another high-profile ensemble cast, just like the previous seasons, which featured several Hollywood A-listers like Mahershala Ali, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams.
“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

In True Detective: Night Country, John Hawkes (Deadwood, Winter’s Bone) will play Hank Prior, “a police officer with old grudges hiding under a quiet surface.” Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who, The Leftovers) will play Ted Corsaro, “the regional Chief of Police and a political animal with a long history tying him to Liz Danvers.”
Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve, Andor) will play Rose Aguineau, “a survivalist with a past full of secrets.” Finn Bennet (The Nevers, Hope Gap) will play Peter Prior, “Liz Danvers’ protégé and apprentice— both for better or worse.” He appears to be related to Hawkes’ character, but that isn’t confirmed yet. Lastly, newcomer Anna Lambe (Trickster, The Grizzlies) will portray Kayla Malee, “a young nurse with little patience for anybody that messes with her family.”
True Detective Is One Of HBO’s Best Shows
HBO
True Detective debuted on HBO in 2014 and immediately became one of the biggest hits on the network. The first season, written and created by Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Fukunaga (No Time to Die, Maniac), received overwhelming critical acclaim and high ratings. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s lead performances, the somber tone, writing, and Fukunaga’s direction were praised, and True Detective went on to win numerous accolades.
Unfortunately, the next two seasons of True Detective failed to replicate the brilliance or the TV ratings of season one, although they were still quite enjoyable in their own right. However, HBO appears to be starting afresh with True Detective: Night Country with a change of scenery and creative team.
Nic Pizzolatto, who served as a writer on all three seasons of True Detective, will be taking a backseat this time, with Issa Lopez (Tigers Are Not Afraid) taking over the reins as writer, director, and showrunner. Pizzolatto is still onboard as an executive producer on True Detective: Night Country with McConaughey, Harrelson, and Fukunaga. Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) also serves as an executive producer on season 4.
Also, True Detective: Night Country seems to be departing from the southern gothic tone of the previous seasons and taking a page from Nordic Noir instead, judging by its Alaskan winter setting. Hopefully, Night Country will mark a return to form for the series.
There is currently no word on True Detective: Night Country’s release date, but the show is expected to commence production in the fall.
