It’s official, Cobra Kai will return for a sixth season. But it will be the show’s last. Streaming giant Netflix took to social media to announce that the hugely popular Karate Kid sequel series will return to the mat one last time in season 6, with Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg releasing a joint statement and sending a special thanks to fans.

“When Daniel LaRusso arrived in the Valley with his mother in 1984, little did he know that his life was about to be forever changed,” Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg said in the statement. “The same went for three young kids from New Jersey who hadn’t yet met one another. Daniel’s journey from bullied teen to underdog hero became an indelible part of our childhoods, and something that we would always carry with us in our hearts.”

They continue, expressing the joy of bringing the Karate Kid franchise back to life all these years later. “Reacquainting the world with ‘The Karate Kid’ universe has been our humble honor. Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub, and all the amazing original cast members,” the statement continues. “It has also enabled us to play sensei, expanding the original storylines and birthing a new generation of underdogs. We’ve never once taken this opportunity for granted.”

They conclude by sending their gratitude to fans, as well as stating that they have been allowed to end Cobra Kai on their terms, with the now-confirmed sixth season bringing an end to this era of the Miyagiverse.

“Our day one goal with Cobra Kai has always been to end it on our terms, leaving the Valley in the time and place we’ve always imagined,” the creators add. “So it is with immense pride and thankfulness that we are able to announce that achievement. The upcoming Season Six will mark the conclusion of Cobra Kai. While this may be a bittersweet day for the fandom, the Miyagiverse has never been stronger. This fandom is the BEST on the planet and we hope to be telling more Karate Kid stories with you down the line. Because as we all know, Cobra Kai Never Dies.”

Cobra Kai Spinoffs Are Already in Development

     Netflix

Cobra Kai has been a massive success since it began back in 2018. Set 34 years after the events of The Karate Kid, Cobra Kai focuses on a struggling Johnny Lawrence, now in his 50s, who works as a part-time handyman. A lot has happened since those humble beginnings, with martial arts infecting the Valley like a plague. The last we saw of Cobra Kai, there was all manner of fighting, reconciliation, and karate-infused drama. Oh, and Kreese is now on the loose.

While news that this will be the final season of Cobra Kai is sure to result in some tears, this is not the end for the franchise, as spinoffs are already now in early development.

Starring Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Martin Kove, Peyton List, and Thomas Ian Griffith, the first five seasons of Cobra Kai are now available to stream on Netflix.
