Canadian actor cousin duo Stephen Amell and Robbie Amell of the Arrow fame and The DUFF and Prime Video’s Upload fame, respectively, came together sometime in 2016 and decided to make their first feature film together. To do so, they headed to crowdfunding website Indiegogo to start a campaign. They did so exceedingly well that they became the biggest ever crowdfunded Canadian film ever. They managed to bring in a staggering $2.5 million from over 30,000 backers. A couple of years down the line, the Amell cousins released a short film as a teaser, and finally, in 2019, they released Code 8 in a limited theatrical run.
While Code 8 did get some good reactions from fans and critics when it hit the theaters, the movie didn’t actually gain any traction until it was released on Netflix in April 2020, right at the peak of the COVID pandemic. The fact that everyone was cooped up in their homes and resorted to watching everything there was on Netflix, and, of course, the movie itself being good, it broke into the list of Netflix Top 10 films, proving that viewers were really into watching sci-fi flicks.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Because it did so well on Netflix, the movie is officially up for a sequel with the title Code 8: Part II. The Amell cousins will feature in the sequel again, and this time, it will expand the world that has been built so far. Stephen Amell told Deadline mid last year, “We built the world in the first one, and now we’re ready to blow it out!” We are super excited by just reading that sentence, so let’s see all there is to know about the Code 8 sequel.
The Plot
Netflix
In the original movie, we saw a near-future world with only 4% of humanity possessing abnormal abilities like healing, super strength, and telekinesis. But, people with these powers were deemed criminals, thus rendering those with these abilities poor and forcing them to take up day laborer jobs to make a living. People with these abilities often come under the radar of the cops who believe in shooting them first and asking questions later. And they’re further tormented with drones and robots meant to control them. In order to survive, the 4% have to resort to a life of crime. Things turn for the worse when a new drug called “psyke” is made by tapping into their spinal fluid.
The sequel for Code 8 will follow a teen girl seeking justice for her brother, who was one of the 4% and was killed by these corrupt police officers. Though, she’s a target herself since she witnessed the cover-up of the incident. To fight against the cops, she seeks Garrett and Connor for help. They come face to face with a well-protected, highly known, and completely corrupt police sergeant on their mission. This guy will do anything and everything to ensure he’s not exposed. This little brief storyline for Code 8: Part II has left us at the edge of our seats.
The Cast
The Amell cousins are returning in the sequel to reprise their previous characters. Stephen Amell plays Garrett Kelton, a criminal who recruits day laborer Connor Reed, played by Robbie Amell, to help pull off crimes. There is no news about who else will be joining them in the sequel or if we will be seeing the original characters and cast from the first movie. Some actors from the original film include Agent Park, played by Sung Kang, Nia, played by Kyla Kane, and Laysla De Oliveira, as Maddy. We know that the sequel will have plenty of roles, such as corrupt cops and a teen girl trying to get justice. So, it’s safe to say that we’ll be seeing many new characters.
In addition to the Amell cousins, we will see the director Jeff Chan come on board for the sequel. Chan also wrote the screenplay with Chris Paré, the original Code 8 screenwriter, and Jesse LaVercombe and Sherren Lee. The sequel will be executive produced like the first movie by XYZ Films, Paré, and the Amell cousins. In the same Deadline interview, Robbie Amell goes on to say:

So far, there’s no update or announcement on a potential release date. However, if filming starts in time, we can expect to see the sequel early to mid of next year. Until then, you can watch the first sci-fi action movie on Netflix.
