Although Chevy Chase has garnered a reputation for being (allegedly) difficult to work with, the circumstances around his departure from NBC’s Community ahead of its fifth season were not well-known.
Chase starred as the old, “politically incorrect” Pierce Hawthorne in the first three seasons of the comedy, which centered on a group of students who form a study group at the dysfunctional Greendale Community College. Only appearing sporadically in the show’s fourth season, Pierce was killed off during the final season to explain Chase’s absence.
Now, a TikTok creator who served as a recurring extra on the community college sitcom is sharing what happened on set the day that Chase was fired from Community. It was previously reported that Chase departed the show after striking a “mutual agreement with NBC.”
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Stitching a video about Chase’s alleged misconduct, which included making racially-motivated remarks thinly veiled as jokes to co-stars Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown between takes, the creator—who goes by JeGaysus—said that Chase used a slur on set while on a tirade about the direction of his character.
Though the usage of the slur was reportedly not directed at any person in particular, it was enough to upset one of his co-stars to the point of refusing to work with him any further.
“I was there when Chevy Chase was fired. Yes, he said the N-word, and Yvette Nicole Brown walked off and said ‘I am not coming back until that man is off the show,’” JeGaysus said.
“As she should,” he added, explaining that Chase was escorted off the lot that same day.
Though Creator Says Chase was “Losing His Mind,” Actor Just Says “I Am Who I Am”

While Chase has been known to have a short temper, with even old Saturday Night Live cast members speaking out about his often crude behavior, JeGaysus says that the comedian seemed to be in an altered mental state when this occurred.
“I want to say one thing about Chevy Chase before we continue,” he said before launching into the story behind Chase’s departure. “He was losing his mind, like dementia status. I’m not saying that gives him a pass, I’m just saying that any time that we were there with him on set, it would take twice as long to shoot and his stand-in had to do most of the work.”
As for Chase? When the actor, who got his start with National Lampoon, was asked about the allegations from former co-stars that he is a “jerk” to work with, Chase told CBS Sunday Morning that it was just his personality and he doesn’t care if he’s abrasive.
“I guess you’d have to ask them. I don’t give a crap. I am who I am. And I like who I am. I don’t care. And it’s part of me that I don’t care. And I’ve thought about that a lot,” he said.
“And I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just don’t care.”
