For several years fans demanded a sequel to Keanu Reeves’ Constantine movie, but rights issues between DC Comics and Vertigo Comics seemingly prevented the film from happening. With Reeves’s return as the fan-favorite character having been announced back in September, director Francis Lawrence has given an update on the sequel and how far it has moved forward. He told ComicBook.com:
This will be more than enough for the many fans of Reeves’s version of the DC demonologist, who was last seen in 2005. Of course, there have been other versions of the character seen on TV since, and a planned new series starring Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù was meant to be joining HBO Max’s DC output before the announcement of Reeves’ belated return, but the reaction to the news of Constantine 2 has been enough for Warner Bros. Discovery to know they have made the right choice in reviving Reeves’ version of the character after almost two decades.
“We don’t have a script, but Keanu, me, and Akiva [Goldsman] who all worked on the first one together have all been trying over the years to get another one going. It’s been tricky because of the DC/Vertigo world and who owns the character and who has control over the characters, trying to get the right people to go forward. We’ve got that now and now we need the story. We’d all love to do it.”

Will Keanu Reeves’ Return as Constantine Be a Hit?
Warner Bros. Pictures
The current trend of belated returns has worked well for some late sequels to movies such as Top Gun and Ghostbusters, but will Constantine 2 be another revival hit or one that should have been left buried? There is no doubt that the 2005 movie has its fans, and although it brought in a respectable $230 million at the worldwide box office, the film did get mixed reviews at the time. While Keanu Reeves is undoubtedly one of the most popular actors in the industry, there is a risk that his return as Constantine could end up being something as unimpressive as his recent appearance in The Matrix Resurrections.
There are a lot of uncertainties about where DC films are going right now, with changes at Warner Bros. Discovery having seen the cancelation of many long-gestating projects and the ushering in of others. For now, Constantine 2 seems to be one of the movies that are on relatively solid ground, and the update from Lawrence will have gone a long way in settling the nerves of fans who have been waiting to find out more since the movie’s original announcement two months ago.
Other than the involvement of Reeves, there has been no word on who else could be reprising their roles in the sequel, or whether the film will be a movie that sits on its own like Joker and The Batman, or whether it will somehow be tied to the new plans for the DCU.
