It has been a long time coming, but it looks like the frequently rumored and fan-demanded sequel to the 2005 DC thriller Constantine is finally going into development with Keanu Reeves returning in the lead role. As reported by Deadline, Reeves will be reunited with original movie director Francis Lawrence, and the sequel will be written by Akiva Goldsman, with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot producing along with Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures.
When it comes to fan-favorite characters in the world of DC, Keanu Reeves’ take on the supernatural exorcist and demonologist John Constantine is right up there will the biggest comic book names like those of the Justice League, and 17 years after the original big screen outing for the character it looks like fan wishes to see Reeves reprising his role have finally started to come true.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
It is usually expected that any successful comic-book movie is automatically green-lit for a sequel these days, but back in 2005, even taking $200 million didn’t appear to be enough to get a sequel to Constantine instantly into development. Of course, Reeves hasn’t exactly been sitting around idle waiting for Warner Bros. to come looking for him, and he is currently in the middle of his current John Wick franchise, as well as having recently returned to The Matrix franchise at the end of last year, and also provided the voice of Batman for DC’s League of Super-Pets. Of course, news that he will now be bringing Constantine back to the big screen again will go down well with fans, who simply can’t get enough Keanu Reeves goodness in their lives.
A John Constantine Series Was Said To Be Coming To HBO Max Only Last Month
DC Comics
There have been a lot of changes at Warner Bros. Discovery in the last couple of months, especially when it comes to their DC output both in cinemas and on HBO Max. With many shows and movies being canceled, including the well-publicized scrapping of Batgirl, one that seemed to be moving ahead was a Constantine series, and only last month it was said that the show was on solid ground but had no connection with Reeves’ movie or other versions of Constantine already explored on screen. It was said:
just one month later, that series is now dead at HBO Max, with Abrams now seemingly working on the movie instead. More information will likely be coming in the future about the film, but for now, it will be enough for most fans to just know that Reeves’ return to the role is now very much on the cards.
“One HBO Max project that sources point to as being on solid ground and moving along is Constantine, a darker reboot of the DC Comics character from British writer Guy Bolton. The project is set around a diverse lead, rather than the one played by Matt Ryan in the 2014 NBC series and The CW’s Arrowverse, or the 2005 Keanu Reeves feature film.”
