Hole singer Courtney Love stands by her recent claim that Brad Pitt had her fired from Fight Club, but she also insists there’s no ill will held against the actor - she just wants him to stop trying to make a Kurt Cobain biopic. Recently, Love appeared as a guest for an interview on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast. During the interview, Love said she was originally cast to play Marla Singer, Helena Bonham Carter’s character, in the David Fincher movie Fight Club. However, she also claimed to be fired after rejecting a pitch from Pitt and director Gus Van Sant to let them make a scripted film about Cobain.
Subsequently, Love’s comments generated a lot of attention, though some were skeptical about the veracity of what she was saying. Taking to Instagram in response to her doubters, the People vs. Larry Flynt star posted a statement expanding upon the situation with Pitt. She doubles down on her story, noting that she’s only gone public with it in the hopes that it will stop Pitt from his continued attempts to make the Cobain biopic. According to Love, she rejected another offer he’d come to her with in 2020, only for him to “ignore” what she said.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
In her statement, Love says she chose to meet with Pitt over Zoom in 2020 as she is in “recovery,” and as she heard Pitt was similarly struggling with his own demons, she thought perhaps they’d find out they were on the same page. She says that Pitt didn’t take her seriously during that Zoom meeting, which was why she was mad enough to publicly state their issues.
“Brad pushed me a bridge too far,” Love said in the statement. “I don’t like the way he does business or wields his power. It’s a simple fact, and it started during the production of Fight Club. I understand how much of a game roulette casting is. I am not here 22 years later bitching about losing a part playing someone’s side piece in a movie.”
Noting that Brad kept “stalking” her about the Kur movie, she added, “It’s not just the Zoom I had with Brad in 2020 where I said no to (Plan B Films) & Brad producing it. It’s that I said NO on the Zoom and that was not enough, and I was not heard. I was ignored. I had no plans to bring it up with Marc Maron but up it came. I told the story because I felt Pitt would not stop pursuing Kurt - unless I said it in public.”
Brad Pitt Can’t Play Kurt Cobain
Love goes on to clarify that she considers herself a fan of Pitt as an actor, and she doesn’t want him to be angry with her. With that said, she also admits she doesn’t agree with how Pitt works as a film producer, and that’s where the disconnect lies.
“I don’t want Brad to be pissed off at me and become his resentment,” she says. “I want him to do better. I’m not into assault. Cmon brother Pitt. I wish you well, truly. If he’s mad at me, that’s his problem. I enjoy him as a movie star immensely. Not so much as a biopic producer.”
On Fight Club, she went on to note, “I’m sure Helena Bonham Carter was utterly meant to be Marla Singer and I do not bear her or Edward Norton or David Fincher or Art Linson - all people whose work & genius I respect immensely - any ill will.”
