Well, that was quick. After 15 seasons, the police procedural Criminal Minds aired its last episode in 2020 but most of the FBI Behavioral Unit (B.A.U.) profilers are ready to get back to work and will do via a Paramount+ reboot. The streamer has placed a 10-episode series order for a continuation of the long-running CBS series.

Cast members rumored to return to the series are Joe Mantegna, Adam Rodgriguez, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, A.J. Cook and Paget Brewster. Of course, Shemar Moore had already long left and settled into his new role on the CBS series S.W.A.T. Matthew Gray Gubler, who played the autodidact Dr. Spencer Reid, made clear early on that he would not be returning. Gubler starred in more episodes than anyone else and even directed a few of them. In 2020, he told TVLine,

In the meantime, Joe Mantegna took to Twitter to reveal the set for Criminal Minds reboot.

“I kind of liken it to if you go to a concert, at a certain point the band has to leave the stage in order to have an encore. It’s just the natural progression.”

Even though the two Criminal Minds spinoffs, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, never gained the popularity as its original predecessor, it did not come as a great surprise when it was announced in 2021 that a Criminal Minds revival was in the works.

As Long as There Are Criminal Minds at Work There Will Be a Need for B.A.U.

There once were conflicting reports as to if there actually would be a reboot. However, Mantegna’s (David Rossi) image confirms a set rebuilt and most of the show’s cast members have agreed to a return so long as they are available. Also new, the reboot is set to have a different format than the original series. The profilers will continue to catch serial killers but instead of devoting an episode to a single case, each case will be stretched to season’s end.

There are also reports of a Criminal Minds docuseries in the works over at Paramount+. According to the platform’s Julie McNamara, the docuseries called The Real Criminal Minds will follow a former FBI profiler discussing actual crimes. No FBI profiler name has been named nor is there any word on the number of episodes. It is being said that a Criminal Minds cast member will host the show and that the docuseries will also be illustrated by clips from the scripted series.
