On October 10th, 1992, audiences tuned in to see the first episode of the classic anime series Yu Yu Hakusho. After thirty years of action and suspense, Crunchyroll has announced a brand new collector’s edition blu-ray box set. The set will carry special goodies both old and new, including two additional newly-dubbed content!
Along with all four seasons of the show, the set will feature two never-before-dubbed OVAs (original video animation) titled “Two Shot” and “All or Nothing”. According to Anime News Network, cast members from Funimation’s original dubbing team will reprise their roles. The OVAs were released in 2018 and were released on a previous blu-ray set exclusive to Japan. Along with the episodes, the set will also feature a ton of bonus content including commentaries, outtakes, and textless versions of the opening and ending sequences.

Like most popular anime, Yu Yu Hakusho started as a manga. Created by Yoshihiro Togashi, the manga ran from 1990 to 1994, it was picked up for English publication by Shonen Jump in 2002, who went on to release all 19 volumes. The anime adaptation ran from 1992 and wrapped in 1995, it was later picked up by Funimation who handled the English dub and distribution in the United States. The show ran on both Adult Swim and Toonami, where its fanbase continued to grow.
Along with the hit television show, the series also spawned two movies. The first movie, titled Yu Yu Hakusho: The Movie, released in 1993 and has a 30-minute runtime. AnimeWorks handled the English dub and first round of distribution, with Funimation handling the later releases. The second film, Yu Yu Hakusho the Movie: Poltergeist Report, was released in 1994 and has a 95-minute runtime. The film’s dubbing and distribution was handled by Central Park Media and Skypilot Entertainment. Both of these movies are notably absent from the upcoming anniversary set but are available to find in previous anniversary releases.
If you consider yourself a collector of anime on physical media and are trying to bulk up your classics, chances are Yu Yu Hakusho has been on your radar for some time if you haven’t been able to nab all the separately released seasons previously. This is a good chance to get all four in one, and those shiny new OVAs are a good extra addition! On the other hand, if you’re entirely new to the series and are curious to dive into a classic, the whole series is available to stream on Crunchyroll with both the original Japanese track and the English dub! The anime streaming service has been working hard to bulk up their library with both older classics and the best upcoming shows!
Currently, Netflix is also in the process of a brand new live action adaptation. But details on that production are currently far and few, aside from a few teaser images released over the past summer!
