Daniel Radcliffe has long been a fan-favorite to take up the mantle of Wolverine from Hugh Jackman, who played the iconic superhero for 17 years. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is coming out in a few months, and the internet is rife with rumors. A Wolverine variant is also reported to appear in the film, and as such, Radcliffe was asked about his involvement in the MCU while attending the premiere of his upcoming film The Lost City at SXSW.
The Harry Potter star dismissed any reports of him being cast as Wolverine but did appreciate the fans’ enthusiasm. Radcliffe also mentioned that he’d be open to playing the clawed superhero but doubts Marvel will go that route. Speaking to Brandon Davis of Phase Zero podcast, Radcliffe said,
Fans have been campaigning for Daniel Radcliffe to play James “Logan” Howlett/Wolverine in the MCU since 2019. Owing to his short stature (Logan, too is notoriously short in the comics – 5’3") and his terrific acting skills, Radcliffe is the ideal choice to play Logan for many comic-book fans. After bidding goodbye to Harry Potter, Radcliffe has stayed away from franchise films, opting instead to star in niche films like Jungle, Guns Akimbo, and Swiss Army Man. Hopefully, Marvel will listen to the fans and prove Radcliffe wrong.
“So many people come up to me like, ‘Hey man, I heard the Wolverine news, that’s really cool.’ And I’m like, ‘Mate, it’s not, I don’t know anything about it.’ Like, I appreciate that somebody has clearly gone, ‘Wolverine is actually short in the comic books, we should get a short guy to do it.’ But I don’t see them going from Hugh Jackman to me afterward, but who knows. Prove me wrong, Marvel.”
Taron Egerton, another favorite for the role, recently responded to Wolverine casting rumors in a similar fashion as fellow Brit Radcliffe, saying: “There’s no truth in it at all. There’s no truth in it. It would, be, obviously, really exciting, but I don’t know… Yeah, of course [I’d take that role]. That’s like playing Bond. It would be exciting to play a role where you play to such a huge audience. Those movies are the most-watched movies in the world. It’s a great thrill, and it’s a great part. But there’s no truth in it. Very flattering, though.”
