Don’t ask Daniel Radcliffe for his opinion on the Academy Awards fiasco, as he was hoping to avoid becoming a part of the infamous story. On Sunday night, Chris Rock joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hairstyle and was given a smack across the face by Will Smith as a result. Controversially, Smith went on to accept the Oscar for Best Lead Actor that night, prompting many to question why the King Richard actor wasn’t arrested or, at the least, escorted out of the building after attacking an award presenter.

Many celebrities have been weighing in, given that the incident happened on the biggest night of the year for Hollywood with millions of people watching around the world. Naturally, the situation came up with The Lost City star Daniel Radcliffe in a recent interview in the UK for Good Morning Britain. For his part, Radcliffe wouldn’t give any specifics as to how he personally felt about the whole thing, as he feels that he’s already heard enough opinions weighed in that he doesn’t want to add any more to them. Here’s how Radcliffe puts it, per Variety.

While he’s not taking sides, Radcliffe did admit that he knows what it’s like to feel conflicted when having jokes thrown his away at award ceremonies. For Radcliffe, it was a little different, as he came onto the scene as a child star and lead actor of the Harry Potter films. Radcliffe recalls not quite knowing if people were laughing with him or at him, and his way of getting through it was to simply put on a smile.

“I’m just so already dramatically bored of hearing people’s opinions about it that I just don’t want to be another opinion adding to it."

“When you’re going on stuff as a kid you’re never quite sure if the joke’s with you or you’re the butt of the joke. So you sort of have a mode of just being like ‘I’ll just keep smiling and laughing and maybe it’ll end soon.’”

Many celebrities have in fact weighed in on the Oscars incident. While there are many who agree that Chris Rock’s joke may have been in poor taste, the consensus seems to be that Smith still crossed a line regardless by getting violent with the comedian. Rock reportedly denied filing criminal charges against Smith, but there still may be disciplinary action taken against the King Richard actor. The Academy has recently released a statement apologizing to Rock and suggesting that actions are soon to be taken against Smith.

“Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television,” the Academy’s statement read. “Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.”

Insisting that Smith refused to leave the ceremony when asked, the statement continues, “Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated. While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”
