The Marvel SDCC 2022 panel brought exciting news for fans, as a brand new original series, Daredevil: Born Again, is scheduled to head to Disney Plus! With rumors of a possible Daredevil series having made their rounds on the mill for quite some time now, years, in fact, fans are over the moon at their hopes for a Daredevil-centered narrative finally being confirmed. Marvel’s confirmation of the series has also been enough to send fan expectations soaring. “I hope that Born Again creates a rivalry with Matt and Dex that comes close or even tops what they did with Daredevil and Kingpin,” said one fan on Twitter, voicing what they hoped to see in the series.

With Daredevil: Born Again only having been announced quite recently, alongside announcements for other projects such as Secret Invasion, Echo, Blade, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3, not much information regarding the series is known at the time of writing. No details regarding the plot of the newly announced series have been made public yet. However, fans have had a few assumptions regarding a possible plot line for the show. A popular theory, carrying from the title of the series and the comics, is that Daredevil: Born Again might follow what Den of Geek calls “one of Daredevil’s best stories — and one his bleakest.”

As per the comics, the story begins with Daredevil’s secret identity being sold to the Kingpin by the drug-addicted Karen Page in exchange for her next fix. Based on the information given by Page, Kingpin then sets out to destroy Daredevil’s life. As a result, Murdock is made homeless, broke, and hopeless. The narrative follows the superhero as he fights to find his path back to justice and get his life back on track.

While this narrative appears a plausible path for the new series to explore, it still remains only an assumption. With Marvel remaining tight-lipped on the direction of the series, for now, only time will reveal much-anticipated details.

Allowing familiarity with the brand-new series, Charlie Cox will be reprising his role as Daredevil’s Matt Murdock, a lawyer who is blind but has heightened senses and uses his evolved fighting skills to battle crime in addition to fighting for justice. It has also been reported that Vincent D’Onofrio will be again taking on the role of crime lord Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin.

Only Cox and D’Onofrio have been confirmed for their roles in the series. However, there are hopes that supporting characters such as Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page, Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson, Joanne Whalley’s Sister Maggie Grace, and Stephen Rider’s Blake Tower make a return.

From Netflix to Disney+

Daredevil: Born Again is the second time that a series based on everyone’s favorite enigmatic lawyer is coming to screens. An initial Daredevil live-action show first aired on Netflix in 2015. The series ran for a total of three seasons, giving it a lifespan of three years, from 2015 to 2018. The series was created by Drew Goddard and was helmed by Steven S. DeKnight for the first season and Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez for the second season. Erik Oleson joined the team as showrunner for the third season.

The series was well-received among both fans and critics, leading to the series receiving widespread recognition over the years. The series won several awards, including nominations for Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. After a significantly successful run, the show was canceled by Netflix in November 2018. Although the cancellation occurred somewhat abruptly and came as a disappointment to many fans, there is a high probability that the series was pulled from Netflix, like many other Marvel properties, to enable Marvel to stream their work on their very own streaming service.

Talking about the sudden ending of the original Daredevil run with the Marvel News Desk podcast in January 2022, D’Onofrio said:

Release Date

     Marvel Studios

Daredevil: Born Again, having only been announced in July this year, has a long way to go regarding being available on the screen. Sticking to an admittedly realistic timeline, in their SDCC announcement of the series, Marvel stated that the original series would only be available for viewing in Spring 2024. This leaves fans enough time to brush up on their Daredevil lore and catch up on all the other exciting Marvel releases.

“You know, at the same time the group #SaveDaredevil started to rise, we started to learn… the reasons why that happened and so we understood what Marvel was doing because of Disney+ and it coming out… and it kind of made sense business wise”

She-Hulk, scheduled to hit screens in just a few days, would be of particular importance given that Daredevil will make an appearance in the series!
