It has now been confirmed that Charlie Cox will return in Daredevil: Born Again, with both the actor and character all set to fully join the MCU. The news has left some fans concerned over how the character will be portrayed, with many worried that The Man Without Fear could become far too comical. Well, speaking with Variety, Charlie Cox has assured fans that Daredevil will not become slapstick…though there could be a lot more lightheartedness.

Appearing at D23, Cox stated that Daredevil: Born Again will not go the sitcom route of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. The actor implied that the soft reboot Disney+ series will maintain some of the same darkness of the Netflix show, while adding that there is room for a few more laughs.

“I don’t think that would work. Not over the course of our entire season. Not with this character. I don’t think it’s necessarily truthful enough to the source material for it to really work.”

Marvel fans will be treated to some more Daredevil action amid a lighter tone in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which finds Charlie Cox reprising the role of Matt Murdock and thus joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While we do not yet know how prominent Cox’s role in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law will be, we do know that he will don a red-and-yellow suit while working alongside She-Hulk to solve a case.

“There’s plenty of comics, Daredevil comics, there’s plenty of runs where there is levity. There’s lightheartedness. There is fun. And I think with 18 episodes, you got time to do a bit of both.”

Daredevil: Born Again Will Be a Reboot Rather Than a Fourth Season

Following his appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, as well as an expected performance in the Disney+ series Echo, Charlie Cox will take the lead in his own Disney+ series. Titled Daredevil: Born Again, the actor has revealed several new details regarding the series, including that it will be something new rather than a season 4 of the well-regarded Netflix show. “It is a Season 1, it is not Season 4, so it is a whole new thing,” Cox explained at D23 Expo. “Which I think is the way to go. If you are going to do it again, do it differently.”

Cox has also explained the meaning behind the title, revealing that it does not mean that Daredevil: Born Again will adapt the 1986 comic book story arc by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli. “I don’t think it means we’re going to tell the Frank Miller story of Born Again in the comics,” he said. “I don’t think it means that. I think it’s — you know we made the [Netflix] show, it ended, years passed, and we’re making another show. It’s a perfect title.”

Daredevil: Born Again will consist of 18 episodes, far more than either Netflix or Disney+ series are usually given, with Charlie Cox hoping to play a major role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward. “I see him as being a key member of the Avengers, imperative to everything that they do,” the actor said when asked whether the street-level vigilante will ever fight alongside Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the rest of The Avengers.

Daredevil: Born Again is due for release in Spring 2024.
