Controversial comedian Dave Chappelle is heading back to New York this weekend. It has been announced by NBC that Chappelle will be hosting Saturday Night Live on the Nov. 12 episode, marking his third time serving as a host of the long-running sketch comedy series. Joining him for the show will be Black Star as the musical guest.

Perhaps not so coincidentally, Chappelle’s newest stint as SNL host coincides with big news in politics, coming days after the midterm elections. Chappelle debuted as host in 2016 just days after Donald Trump was elected President of the United States. He returned four years later to host the show in 2020 shortly after Joe Biden defeated Trump to claim the Oval Office. It’s all but certain Chappelle will be touching on politics at some point in his monologue.

Chappelle will follow Amy Schumer, who hosted on Saturday night with musical guest Steve Lacy. Previous episodes for this season have featured Miles Teller with Kendrick Lamar; Brendan Gleeson with Willow; and both Megan Thee Stallion and Jack Harlow pulling double duty as host and musical guest. This season also comes without many familiar faces from the main cast who were there previously, as SNL recently saw the exits of many major players like Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, Chris Redd, and others.

Dave Chappelle Has Been Making Waves at Netflix

Chappelle will be coming into this SNL stint with controversy following closely behind. With his Netflix comedy specials, culminating with last year’s The Closer, Chappelle has generated tremendous backlash with his material, notably including jokes about the LGBTQ+ community. But for as many people as there were on social media demanding Netflix pull the specials, Netflix has stood by Chappelle, touting the comedian’s success on the streaming platform. The Closer has since been nominated for an Emmy.

“I think it’s very important to the American culture generally to have free expression,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos later said in defense of Chappelle. “We’re programming for a lot of diverse people who have different opinions and different tastes and different styles, and yet we’re not making everything for everybody. We want something for everybody, but everything’s not going to be for everybody.”

Earlier this year, Chappelle also teamed back up with Netflix to appear at the Netflix Is A Joke comedy festival. At the event, a man rushed the stage and attacked Chappelle. The assailant was later charged with assault with a deadly weapon after a blade was found in his possession. Chappelle was not seriously injured in the attack.
