David Beckham, one of the best football players in history known for his unwavering dedication to England, guided his team to victory several times. Taking the nation to the 2002 World Cup Finals with his signature free kick on Greece was one of his most memorable moments. With his new Disney+ docuseries Save Our Squad, he’s returning to help the young athletes struggling to make it in leagues in his homeland.

Although David Beckham is an exceptional football player, he is also well-known for his looks and fashion sense and has prior experience with TV shows and movies. The documentary series is produced by the collaboration of Studio 99 and Twenty Twenty Production (Winner of BAFTA and RTS Awards). Disney+ released a full trailer for the upcoming four-part docuseries starring Beckham as the mentor and a few young players striving to do their best in the league.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Here’s everything we know about the inspiring miniseries Save Our Squad.

Save Our Squad: The Plot

David Beckham may look to live a lavish life on social media, but his heart always remains with football. In the upcoming documentary series, he returns home to East London pitches, where he started playing as a kid. Many young players, as we know, struggle to maintain their position in the team, and that is the least of their concerns. Football competitions in England are highly competitive, and coping with the practice and stress while loving it with enthusiasm is not something everyone can handle.

Due to these circumstances, several teams remain at the bottom of the league and suffer relegation on a regular basis. David Beckham will be mentoring Westward Boys, a football team on the verge of relegation, and this is not just any random football club. Westward Boys is his first football club, and it earned him a head start in his career. Beckham, together with other head coaches, nurtures young footballers into professional players in an attempt to return the club to its former glory.

This uplifting and heartwarming documentary depicts the pain and dedication of coaches and players, as well as the criticism they receive when they fail to fulfill expectations. On the bright side, we get to see one of our favorite football players/people, David Beckham, interacting with the club members and players during practice sessions and detailing the difficulties he had during his career.

Save Our Squad: The Cast & Crew

     Disney+

While David Beckham is the only star cast in the documentary, the other actors/players are real football players and coaches. David Beckham’s production company, Studio 99, is co-producing the docuseries alongside Twenty Twenty. Sea Doyle, the executive producer and director of the miniseries, shared his thoughts on Save Our Squad:

Diego Rodriguez, who previously worked on several football-related documentaries, handles the cinematography, so we can presume the project is in safe hands. The sound department is led by Blake Guy (Crossroad) and Alex Peterson (The Peripheral), and based on their prior work, we can expect a moving music composition.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to show the importance and impact of grassroots football in communities in the UK. The series will be exciting, dramatic, uplifting and full of heart and courage — everything David had in his own playing days!”

Everything Else We Know

David Beckham is closely connected to Save Our Squad since Westward FC is where he grew up and discovered opportunities to live his dream life. Even after playing for Manchester United for 11 seasons and captaining his nation from 2000 to 2006, his affection for his first club never wavered. David Beckham expressed his heartfelt words during an interview with Variety:

While Save Our Squad highlights his passion for the first club and his homeland, Beckham’s next Netflix documentary series, helmed by Oscar winners Fisher Stevens and John Battsek, will delve deeper into the athlete’s life. With all the buzz going on among the football communities and the production quality, Save Our Squad has the potential to become one of the best sports documentaries, but only time will tell.

“It is fantastic to be making Save Our Squad with Twenty Twenty and to shine a light on the kind of grassroots football that I experienced growing up and which gave me so much at the start of my life in the game. I was so fortunate to have a long and successful playing career and now to have the opportunity to give back to these communities as a mentor is incredible. Developing and nurturing young talent is so important in the game, and it is great to be working with Disney+ on this project.”
