Don’t worry, Crimes of the Future fans; a #ReleaseTheCronenCut campaign won’t be necessary for the director’s latest film. During an interview with IGN, the director revealed only one cut of the movie exists, and it’s the one David Cronenberg always intended to make. However, with viral movements like #ReleaseTheSnyderCut and #ReleaseTheAyerCut making waves across social media over the last few years, fans can rarely be sure that the movie they see is the director’s original vision.
However, Cronenberg wants to assure audiences that everything the director wanted in the film is included. “There will be no director’s cut, because for me every cut is the director’s cut, there is no other cut,” Cronenberg told IGN. “I don’t pay attention to censorship or anything like that. Each country has its own weird censorship. If you try to protect yourself against all of that, you are paralyzing yourself. So, I ignore all that. And I just decide what the movie wants.”
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Cronenberg has never been one to shy away from gore and pushing a film’s rating to its limits. Whether it’s The Fly (1986), Videodrome (1983), Crash (1996), or the majority of his other movies, the filmmaker has a vision and sticks to it.
He added that two scenes were cut, although the decision was Cronenberg’s.
“Some movies, extreme violence is needed in the movie. There are other movies where there’s a violent action that takes place narratively, but doing it in an extreme, gory way would derail the movie, it would take people out of the movie because of the tone of the rest of the movie. So, each movie has its own demands and that’s all I was paying attention to completely with this movie. And that for me is the normal way.”
When you have been a director of successful films for over 50 years, you get quite a bit of input on the film’s final version.
“There were two scenes. Not very long that I cut. And the only reason was, it’s like your second draft. I never did a second draft. So, I shot everything that I had written and discovered that two scenes seemed to be repetitions of information in other scenes, and suddenly it seemed redundant, that’s it. So, not for any other reason, so I took those scenes out.”
Crimes of the Future Early Reception

Although Crimes of the Future doesn’t officially release until June 10th, early screenings began showing today. Despite several walk-outs at the Cannes screening last week, the reception to the film so far has been positive.
