Some of the most interesting characters for audiences to watch are those that have incredibly grey morals. Seeing characters that are realistic because of their emotions and motivations being something else besides righteous avenging or because “it’s the right thing to do” always makes for a more complex story.

Artemis of Bana-Mighdall Could Rival Wonder Woman

     DC Comics

RELATED: The Batman: Actors Who Should Play Mr. Freeze in the Sequel

Artemis would make an incredible leading lady and an exciting one to watch kick butt and take names on-screen. She would rival Wonder Woman and even give us an opportunity to see more of Red Hood, who many fans love and are always looking to see more of.

Azrael is Sadly Overlooked

     DC Comics

This anti-hero is fascinating for a similar reason to Marvel’s Daredevil – the religious element. He is part of the Order of St. Dumas and believes himself to be, essentially, an archangel of justice. He is a vigilante and assassin with a very muddled moral compass and a flaming sword of righteousness. He would be interesting to watch for the sake of dissecting his morality and motivations throughout his story and for his dramatic costume design and weapon.

While Azrael has made a few brief appearances in cinema, he is very overlooked and often forgotten. He deserves a chance to have a more developed story on screen – especially now that we have a new generation of Batman, who Azrael is known to assist in fighting crime from time to time.

Etrigan the Demon (Jason Blood) Has It All

This is the anti-hero for those who love a little history, a little magic, and a little something scary. Etrigan began as a knight of Camelot swept up in the battle against Morgan Le Fey. The knight is originally named Jason, but the sorcerer Merlin uses him as a vessel for the demon Etrigan who helps them fight against Le Fey. With this summoning, Merlin binds Jason and Etrigan to one another. Jason is now immortal and continues on with his life. He studies magic and demonology that he uses on his adventures, until he is taken over by or summons Etrigan, who is also doing some of his own work and scheming with the forces of Hell.

This anti-hero has a little bit of everything when it comes to origins and storyline. Much like our beloved Venom, there’s lots of potential when it comes to making a movie or series for this character with a shared body.

Lobo is Wonderfully Chaotic

Then there’s the chaotic insanity that is Lobo, the sole surviving member of his species only because he wiped out his entire race. He has a passion for killing and finds fun in destruction, yet he still has a soft spot for space dolphins. Lobo thrives in chaos but holds himself accountable to his own moral code, where his word is his bond. This character has a lot of baggage and moral ambiguity to unpack. Lobo would be fascinating to watch for fans of characters like Peacemaker or Marvel’s The Punisher. He would also be interesting for those who love costume design since Lobo has various iconic looks in the comics. Lobo has a lot to love and hate, but he would certainly make for an entertaining main character.

It’s always fun to watch the story of an anti-hero from the safety of the audience. To see them fight callously, to wreak havoc, but to be balanced by those small moments of humanity is so enticing for viewers. Anti-heroes can be dark, gritty, and cruel but also incredibly human. That’s part of what makes them so scary and so interesting at the same time. These anti-heroes could be anyone. They could be us. If something had gone differently in the lives of these characters, they might have become true heroes – or are there any true heroes at all?
