With films like The Batman and Black Adam, 2022 was a tremendous year for DC, proving that quantity isn’t as important as engaging people with quality content. While The Batman may have coined the term “vengeance” to characterize the true dark side of the vigilante, Black Adam demonstrated that instead of a hero, people need a merciless guardian who can crush the enemies aiming to take over Kahndaq.
Despite James Gunn’s recent revocation of Henry Cavil’s role as Superman and the cancelation of many DC films, the forthcoming year still appears to be rather promising, with four officially announced films and an intriguing television renewal. Unfortunately, fans will not see their favorite actors in most of them, as the 2023 lineup is a mix of established and fresh faces.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
With that in mind, here are some of the most anticipated DC movies and television shows coming out in 2023 to keep you entertained all the way through the year’s end. Of course, with all the changes recently, this is subject to change at a moment’s notice.
The Flash Season 9 (February 8, 2023)
Warner Bros.
The Flash may not be the best DC series ever made, but it contributed significantly to the popularity of the Arrowverse, notably with frequent crossovers into Arrow. The CW’s The Flash, which spans 184 episodes, has done an outstanding job of chronicling Barry Allen’s adventures in the DC universe. Although there are times when the story seems to be dragging, fans are always eager to see more episodes of the show.
The Flash Season 9 will reportedly conclude with a short 13-episode run, and with it, the Arrowverse will take its final bow after all these years. CBR claims that the ninth season has already shown the return of a major DC villain following The Rogues’ defeat. Hopefully, the story concludes appropriately, bidding farewell to long-term fans in the most entertaining way imaginable.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods (March 17, 2023)
Shazam, released in 2019, was a meaningful and commercial success, and fans were delighted to see Zachary Levi’s endearingly innocent take on the charismatic superhero. The good news is that the sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to excite viewers even more in the coming year.
It was initially planned for the DC holiday season 2022 lineup; however, it was pushed back to 2023 owing to another scheduling shift made by Warner Bros. While little is known about the sequel’s plot, fan theories suggest it will concentrate on six powerful gods: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Achilles, Zeus, and Mercury, as represented by the acronym Shazam.
The Flash Movie (June 23, 2023)
After appearing in the Justice League movie, Erza Miller will again reprise his role on the big screen in The Flash. Although the film’s director has changed more frequently than Barry Allen can change into his outfit, IT’s Andreas Mushchietti took over, and things have been going ahead since then. Despite the cast changes seen in other parts of the franchise, at this time it looks like Miller will continue in the role.
According to the teaser, the story will revolve around Barry attempting to change the past in order to alter the future via Flashpoint, as well as introducing Supergirl and Ron Livingston, who will replace Billy Crudup as Barry’s father, Henry Allen.
Blue Beetle (August 18, 2023)
Warner Bros. Distribution
Blue Beetle is DC’s first Latin superhero to have his own feature film, and thankfully, almost the entire cast and crew is Latin. Warner Bros. has been desperate to incorporate Blue Beetle into their planned films since 2018, and luckily, it is finally heading to the big screen after four years.
As the first appearance of Blue Beetle in the DCU, the film tells the story of Jaime Reyes, a Mexican-American boy who discovers a mechanical scarab that subsequently fuses with his spine. The ability to conjure a formidable suit may seem like a blessing at first, but how will he cope with the reality that the beetle has its own mind and occasionally takes control of the body?
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (December 25, 2023)
Almost four years have passed since Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa and directed by James Wan, introduced audiences to a brand-new version of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Following its $1.14 billion worldwide box office success, the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has become one of the most anticipated DC films of 2023.
With almost a year until its release, very little is known about the film’s story. The movie’s basic plot states that Arthur is “forced to trust a menacing ally to preserve his beloved Atlantis, as well as the rest of the world when they are both threatened by chaos and destruction.”
As we move into 2022, this is what we know will be on screens in 2023. We’ll see if that changes with Gunn’s new plans for the DCU.
