Has Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld now confirmed that Deadpool 3 will follow Wade Wilson and Wolverine on a road trip? Speaking with Comicbook.com, Liefeld was asked what he wanted to see happen in the upcoming sequel, with the comic legend responding with an answer that seems to suggest that he knows exactly what we’re going to see.

Referencing some of the most iconic, beloved partnerships in buddy-cinema history, including Butch and Sundance, Riggs and Murtaugh, and Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, Liefeld seems pretty confident that the road trip angle is what Deadpool 3 will center on.

“Bing Crosby/Bob Hope, Road pictures. I feel like that’s what we’re getting. Or maybe it’s more like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Sundance Kid was more serious and Butch Cassidy was more of a conniver. And maybe it’s more like Lethal Weapon, and it’s Danny Glover and Mel Gibson. But somewhere between those models that I just gave you. Bing and Bob; Butch and Sundance; Newman/Redford; Hugh and Ryan. It’s going to be a monster.”

Liefeld continued, revealing that one thing he would love to see happen is a healing factor face-off, with Deadpool and Wolverine taking chunks out of each other until only one mutant is left standing.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

While there are still many mysteries left surrounding the direction of Deadpool 3, Logan and Wade embarking on a road trip is now a very safe bet.

“Wouldn’t we just watch them drive across America? Wouldn’t we just watch them walk through a mall? They both have a healing factor. I can see a healing factor one-off. I can see a healing factor one-off where the two of them decapitate one another and regrow limbs. Or at the very least, Wolverine slices generous pieces of Deadpool off. You saw what they did today when they re-enacted the katanas. They’re giving us the memes. I was thinking, ‘How many times did they rehearse that? Did they get that in one take? Two takes?”

Ryan Reynolds Revealed That Deadpool 3 Will Involve a Road Trip Last Year

     20th Century Fox

In true Deadpool style, Ryan Reynolds revealed the road trip plan for the threequel at the beginning of last year. Taking to social media, Reynolds teased details of the plot following the Disney/Fox merger, saying, “It’s critical to have open, honest and healthy discussions around mental health. By retweeting #BellLetsTalk you can make a difference. In case that’s not enough, before Disney bought Fox, Deadpool 3 was gonna be a road trip between Deadpool and Logan. Rashomon style. For real.”

The reason for why Deadpool and Logan head off on a road trip is still unknown, but Deadpool 3 could see the pair attempting to escape the Fox universe and enter the Disney-owned MCU. Perhaps even because of the former’s purchase by the latter. This would certainly allow an explanation as to why the Merc with a Mouth is suddenly a part of the Marvel franchise, as well as offering the movie all manner of opportunities to make fourth wall-breaking references.

Directed by Shawn Levy, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool 3 is now scheduled to be released on September 6, 2024.
