Incendies director Denis Villeneuve has signed onto direct Prisoners, more than a year after Antoine Fuqua stepped away from the project.
Prisoners centers on a father who becomes a vigilante after his daughter is kidnapped. When the police fail to make any progress on the case, the father holds a man hostage who is believed to be responsible for the kidnapping. The movie will be French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s English-language movie debut.
Leonardo DiCaprio had previously been attached to star in Prisoners, although it is believed that he stepped away from the project due to the lengthy search for a director. Here’s what producer Andrew A. Kosove had to say about leaving the project.

Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband) wrote the screenplay for Prisoners, which the producers plan to start shooting sometime this fall.
“He’s a very talented actor but this process of choosing a director outside the three or four he normally works with became too time consuming. I don’t think it will happen with Leonardo.”
