Fincher’s Ambitious Foray Into the Director’s Chair

Fincher found a love for film at a very early age, growing up in San Anselmo, California as a neighbor with none other than George Lucas. He picked up an 8mm camera at eight years old and became absorbed in everything about the filmmaking process. He got his official start on movie sets like Lucas’ Return of the Jedi (1983) and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) as an assistant cameraman, but aspired for more, to be in the director’s chair. He co-founded Propaganda Films and started directing commercials and music videos for some of the biggest brands and music artists alive. Just a few included Paula Abdul, Madonna, Aerosmith, Sting, and Michael Jackson.

Fincher credited his experience making music videos as his own personal “film school.” However, he wasn’t remotely satisfied with the underwhelming substance of commercials and looked ever upward to feature films. His breakthrough debut would be as the replacement director for Alien 3 (1992), which he’d later disown after its battered reception. Despite that hiccup, Fincher would return strong with the iconic crime thriller Se7en (1995) starring Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, and Morgan Freeman. The movie was a box office smash, and it cemented Fincher’s future as a highly sought-after director. He reunited with Brad Pitt for the blockbuster Fight Club (1999) and cast Jodie Foster, and a very young Kristen Stewart in the sleeper hit Panic Room (2002). His career only continued to soar as director of films like Zodiac (2007), The Social Network (2010), and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011).

Later, Finch would find a new home with Netflix and has since directed series landmark projects such as House of Cards, Mindhunter, and the ongoing Love, Death and Robots. However, given France’s ongoing clash with the streaming giant and its impact on box office performances, it’s unclear if Finch’s work with Netflix will be specified within the credit to his achievements.

The César Awards, considered equivalent to the Oscars in Europe, will be held in Paris on Feb. 24. For those who wish, the broadcast can be watched live on the French pay-TV network Canal+.
