Wednesday, the hit series on Netflix, follows Wednesday Addams, the daughter of Gomez and Morticia Addams, as she enrolls in the mysterious and supernatural academy called Nevermore. The academy is filled with secrets and strange occurrences that Wednesday must navigate. One of the key characters in the show is Larissa Weems, the headmistress of Nevermore Academy, played by Gwendoline Christie. Larissa Weems is a powerful and enigmatic character who possesses the ability to shapeshift, and she has a complicated history with Morticia Addams.
Gwendoline Christie revealed in an interview for Vogue’s “Life in Looks” video series that Tim Burton, the director of the first four episodes, gave her freedom to style her character as she wanted. She stated that this was a gift for her, and she took inspiration from Tippi Hedren’s character in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds and modified it to make it her own. She wanted to subvert the idea of the typical Hitchcock heroine, portraying her as someone who is not a victim but rather ruthless and used to being in the shadow of Morticia and never quite good enough.

“Larissa Weems is very special to me, because Tim Burton said to me, ‘Do whatever you want with the character. And that was a gift. I wanted to subvert this idea of the Hitchcock heroine. It was a part I would never have been cast as, I would never be cast to look that way. And I wanted this woman to be not a victim, but someone ruthless, someone that’s grown up being in the shadow of Morticia, someone that’s used to being second best, someone that’s used to nothing ever quite being good enough. And I figured she would look to that magic portal, the cinema, in the same way that I had when I was growing up and would want to embody one of those heroines.”
