Everyone who watches Matt Groening’s 2018 show Disenchantment knows that the series exists in an exciting genre and universe of its own. That being said, like Groening’s wildly popular TV series The Simpsons and Futurama, Disenchantment features an extensive ensemble cast of characters. While Groening’s two prior projects carry a massive cast simply because Groening likes to explore new characters, Disenchantment is more deliberate with this because the fantastical world of Dreamland has a lot to delve into. Groening tells Dan Hyman of Esquire that he began a list of characters and creatures back in 2012, including “gnomes, fairies, imps, goblins, gremlins, trolls, elves, and dragons,” and in Disenchantment, Groening goes ahead and explores them all.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Since the cast of recurring characters is large, this leaves lots of room for a special talent to take on the voices and provides opportunities for some hilarious cameos. If you are not familiar with Disenchantment or are viewing the series for the first time, here’s a quick overview: the show mainly focuses on the rebellious and alcoholic teenager Princess Bean, who kicks the story off by refusing an arranged marriage in her home kingdom of Dreamland and runs away with her ‘personal demon,’ Luci. Bean and Luci run into the optimistic and love-drunk Elfo, an elf who escapes his own community of Elfwood where Elves are annoyingly happy all the time. Together, the three companions embark on adventures that open shocking secrets from their pasts. Here is a comprehensive guide to the cast and characters of Matt Groening’s Netflix show Disenchantment.
Princess Bean (Abbi Jacobson)
Netflix
19-year-old Princess Bean, also known as Tiabeanie Mariabeanie de la Rochambeau Grunkwitz, is voiced by Abbi Jacobson of the series A League of Their Own and Broad City. Bean is the daughter of King Zog and the late Queen Dagmar, who rule over the kingdom of Dreamland. When the show begins, King Zog is married to Bean’s stepmother, Oona.
Bean is a self-pronounced alcoholic, a rebellious and independent soul, who yearns to be free to do what she wants and date who she wants. She resists an arranged marriage set up by Zog, and at one point in the series is romantically involved with another main character, Elfo.
Elfo (Nat Faxon)
18-year-old half-elf, Elfo, voiced by Nat Faxon of Ben and Kate, originally comes from the annoyingly optimistic and candy-obsessed community of Elfwood. In Elfwood, he must be “happy all the time” and spend his days making candy to get paid in candy. At the beginning of the series, Elfo realizes he is depressed and proceeds to escape Elfwood because he isn’t happy there anymore. Upon entering the outside world, Elfo is naive and faces many dangerous challenges. For most of the series, Elfo is in love with Princess Bean.
Luci (Eric Andre)
Luci, Princess Bean’s personal demon, is voiced by Eric Andre of the iconically weird series The Eric Andre Show. Luci was a demon from Maru summoned by the Enchantress and Emporer Cloyd (two villains in the series) to be an emissary, a representative to help their evil mission. Luci is presented to Bean as a wedding gift. Although Luci starts off trying to sabotage Bean’s life, over time he develops a soft spot for both the princess and Elfo and becomes an essential piece in overcoming the various challenges of their adventures.
King Zog (John Dimaggio)
King Zog, voiced by Futurama’s John Dimaggio, is Bean’s father and the ruler over the Kingdom of Dreamland. Zog became king after his older brother was mysteriously poisoned and eventually married Princess Dagmar of Maru, Bean’s mother.
After Bean is born, Dagmar is maliciously turned into a statue and Zog must remarry. He gets together with Oona, a woman of a rival kingdom, to end the war between their communities. Together, they have Bean’s half-brother, Derek. Zog is quite lost and selfish at times and has trouble understanding his kids.
Queen Oona (Tress MacNeille)
Queen Oona, voiced by Tress MacNeille of Futurama, is King Zog’s second wife and Bean’s stepmother. She is a half-amphibian creature from the kingdom of Dankmire who married Zog to solidify a truce between her community and Dreamland. Although she originally behaves like an evil stepmother, Oona grows to be very protective of both Bean and Derek. She becomes the independent and adventurous female role model that Bean needs.
Prince Derek (Tress MacNeille)
Prince Derek, Bean’s lonely, half-amphibian little brother, is also voiced by Tress MacNeille. Derek is originally a shy, hesitant, and quiet character but becomes more obnoxious when he takes control of the throne. Without Bean around, Derek is heir to the throne when King Zog loses mental and physical stability and is bedridden. Derek’s reign ends up being led behind the scenes by Zog’s advisor, Odval.
Sorcerio (Billy West)
Sorcerio is one of Zog’s personal advisors and a particularly unskilled wizard, voiced by Futurama’s Billy West. Sorcerio attempts to provide knowledge on scientific and magical matters, but often ends up delivering flawed information. He is friends and lovers with Zog’s other advisor, Odval. Voice actor Billy West also plays The Jester and Elfo’s father, Pops the Elf, in the series.
Odval (Maurice LaMarche)
Odval is Zog’s advisor and the Prime Minister of Dreamland, voiced by Maurice LaMarche of Futurama. Odval, even though he is the top advisor to the king, is completely untrustworthy. After King Zog is accidentally shot by Bean, Odval does everything in his power to eliminate Bean, Elfo, and Luci so that he may control the kingdom via Derek, like a puppet.
Jerry and The Herold (David Herman)
Jerry and The Harold are both voiced by David Herman of Futurama and Bob’s Burgers. Jerry is the younger brother of Queen Dagmar, Becky, and Cloyd. He is mistreated due to his mental disability and is excluded from his siblings’ evil plans. David Herman also voices The Herold, who regularly relays all the news and main events occurring in Dreamland.
Queen Dagmar (Sharon Horgan)
Queen Dagmar is the ex-wife of King Zog and is voiced by Sharon Horgan of the British comedy shows Pulling and Catastrophe. Although Queen Dagmar is mysteriously turned to stone, it is revealed later on that the poison she drinks was actually meant for Zog, but she accidentally drank it. Dagmar turns out to be part of a much larger evil scheme against Dreamland.
Prince Merkimer (Matt Berry)
Prince Merkimer is the brother of Bean’s original fiancé, Prince Guysbert, who was accidentally impaled before he and Bean could marry. After his brother is killed, Merkimer is next in line to marry Bean, but before he can Elfo, out of jealousy, convinces the groom to drink a concoction of pig and elf blood. Merkimer is transformed into a talking pig and is then unable to marry Bean. Prince Merkimer the pig appears many times in the series and is voiced by the great Matt Berry of What We Do in the Shadows and The IT Crowd.
Bunty and Becky the Enchantress (Lucy Montgomery
Bunty and Becky the Enchantress are both voiced by British comedian Lucy Montgomery of The Armstrong and Miller Show. Bunty is Bean’s doting handmaid and sometimes stands in for Bean’s absent mom. She is a cheery maid despite the way she is treated. Becky the Enchantress lands on the other end of the spectrum and is a fairly evil character. Becky is a Maurivan princess and sorceress and the younger sister of Queen Dagmar. She serves both Dagmar and her evil brother Emporer Cloyd.
Stan the Executioner (Noel Fielding)
Stan the Executioner, Bunty’s husband and head executioner in Dreamland, is voiced by Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh and The IT Crowd’s Noel Fielding. Stan makes amusing appearances sporadically, and despite being an executioner is a very generous soul. He saves Bean, Elfo, and Luci after they are accused of trying to murder King Zog and helps them escape the dungeon.
Emperor Cloyd (Rich Fulcher)
Emperor Cloyd is the ruler of the Kingdom of Maru and brother to Dagmar, Becky, and Jerry. He is one of the masterminds behind the plans to destroy Dreamland and King Zog. He shares the same evil indifference as his sisters. Cloyd is voiced by Rich Fulcher of The Mighty Boosh, which also starred Matt Berry and Noel Fielding.
Although not every minor character is mentioned here, the characters above reoccur in Disenchantment time and time again and play significant roles in the fate of Dreamland. Although the future of Disenchantment is uncertain, the four available seasons are well worth the watch and are available for streaming on Netflix.
