When it was announced that Daredevil and related shows would be leaving Netflix at the end of February, naturally people wondered where those shows would end up. Then a report came out last week that those shows would be added to Disney+ STAR outside of the U.S. But still, there had been no information on when or where those shows would be made available to fans inside the USA. Now, a tweet from the Disney+ Twitter account has confirmed that Disney+ will be adding all of the Defenders shows as well as Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD on March 16.
This is, of course, a first step towards new productions of those characters. If the rumors are true that new shows involving the Defenders are coming, having what was done before available on Disney+ will make it easier for fans to watch everything in one place. Plus with the new parental controls that the streaming service is implementing, even future seasons of more violent shows like Punisher can stay together with the rest of Marvel’s programming rather than being put on the more adult Hulu service.
As for Agents of SHIELD, fans have been clamoring for the series to be added to Disney+ since the streaming service’s inception, but licensing deals have prevented the show from finding a permanent home on Disney+. But despite only being tenuously connected to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole, many fans do consider it a part of the MCU and would like to have it available to watch on Disney+ in full marathons of the MCU. And again, there are rumors that members of the Agents of SHIELD cast may be showing up in future MCU projects. Having the show available on Disney+ for those who might not be as familiar with, say, Daisy Johnson will make bringing those characters into the MCU a little easier.
How To Access Over TV14 Content on Disney+
Disney announced that they would be updating their Parental Controls for Disney+ on March 16 as well. On that day, subscribers will need to update their parental controls in order to watch content that is rated higher than TV14. A pop up will appear on that day to allow subscribers to do so. In addition, each profile will have to have its parental controls set.
Should the subscriber not want to watch these shows or any other over TV14 content, nothing needs to be done. They can just continue watching their Disney+ as normal. Allowing TV14 content such as the Defenders-related shows on Disney+ would allow for Disney to move the rest of the Marvel-related movies that are solely on Hulu, such as Logan to Disney+ and keep all of Marvel together. It also opens the door for more of Disney’s more adult content, such as movies from Fox and Touchstone, to be added to Disney+ behind parental controls. This will increase flexibility for Disney’s streaming releases in the future.
For Marvel fans, though, it means that all of Disney’s Marvel owned movies can be moved to Disney+ and stored in one place rather than having some on Disney+ and some on Hulu.
