Despite the release of several trailers and other promos, much of the mystery behind the upcoming Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness remains intact. It does appear, though, that the movie will follow in the footsteps of Spider-Man: No Way Home and feature all manner of cameos, with Disney+ seemingly confirming that animated What If…? character Captain Carter will leap into live-action.

Shared by Disney+ IT, a translation of this recent tweet reads, “It seems that shield has recently reappeared somewhere … doesn’t that sound like ‘Madness’ to you #CaptainCarter and all the episodes of #WhatIf are waiting for you on #DisneyPlus!”

The first clues regarding an appearance from Captain Carter, a variant of Peggy Carter from an alternate timeline who was given the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers, was hinted at in a recently released poster for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Featuring Doctor Strange at its center surrounded by shattered glass, each shard shows a faded image of a different character, with one seemingly revealing Captain Carter’s shield.

With the poster and now this tease from Disney+, it’s beginning to look highly likely that Captain Carter will stand alongside Doctor Strange as the multiverse continues to crumble in the highly anticipated follow-up. While there has been no word as yet, expect Captain America: The First Avenger and What If…? star Hayley Atwell to reprise the role when it makes the transition from animation to live-action.

Captain Carter Would Not Be the Only Crowd-Pleasing Cameo in Doctor Strange 2

Alongside an appearance from Captain Carter, the recent trailers and posters for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have hinted at a plethora of crowd-pleasing cameos. Both the footage and posters have hinted at the likes of Marvel Zombies, The Fantastic Four’s Mister Fantastic, Namor, Deadpool, and the return of Patrick Stewart as X-Men leader Professor Xavier.

With regards to Deadpool at least, actor Ryan Reynolds has recently denied any involvement in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, saying, “I guess I’m not really supposed to say anything about that, but I’m really not in the movie. I could be an unreliable narrator, but I promise you I’m not in the movie.” Of course, he would not be the first Marvel star to lie about his involvement.

Directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Michael Waldron, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will continue to explore the multiverse. Following the events of Loki, WandaVision, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, the sequel finds Dr. Stephen Strange turning to both old and new mystical allies and traveling into the multiverse to face a mysterious new adversary. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff AKA The Scarlet Witch, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, Benedict Wong as Wong, Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West, and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 6, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
