Doctor Who fans have been given their first good look at Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson as the new Doctor and his companion Ruby Sunday. Dressed in what is seemingly his official costume, Gatwa’s bright orange shirt and brown tweed suit are certainly one to catch the attention, but whether that is a good thing is something fans are already disagreeing on. Check out the look below.
Gatwa will officially take over the reins as the Doctor following David Tennant’s return to the role for three special episodes that will mark the show’s 60th anniversary next year. While very little is known about what kind of Doctor he will play, the dissection of his wardrobe choices is already underway. This ranges from those who think the striking appearance looks perfect to those who seem to have been made physically ill by the combination of orange and brown.

“Damn. He looked great in the first promo shot but this outfit is awful. Clashing brown tweed with an orange t-shirt – why?” one Twitter user commented. Another added, “A bit more conservative than expected. Ncuti is [a] bit more flamboyant with his clothing choices. I like his shoes though.” A third simply said, “That looks terrible.”
However, some were more on board with the look. “Someone ask Ncuti where that outfit is from because I WANT IT,” another response said. A second lover of the costume added, “Love it! Well done team… So looking forward to seeing this duo on screen…and in the comic pages!” A further comment noted, “Was expecting a bit more eccentric, but he looks so good! Really hope they give 15 loads of different looks instead of just changing the jumper.”
How Did Ncuti Gatwa Get The Biggest Role of His Career So Far?
BBC Studios
Following Jodie Whittaker’s iteration of the Doctor, Doctor Who needed to do something special, as thanks mainly to fans hating the writing of Chris Chibnall, the series has been losing a lot of fans. So, in a swirling, unprecedented move, it was announced that Russell T. Davies would be returning to the show as showrunner, and he would be bringing David Tennant back for a short run as the Doctor before a new Doctor would take over in the form of Ncuti Gatwa. When announcing the news, Davies commented:
Jodie Whittaker’s departure was by no means the worst of her run, but it still didn’t quite land with many fans. Whether David Tennant’s return can revive the show’s fortunes and pave the way to a successful run for Gatwa is something we will find out by this time next year.
“The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!”
