When Kevin Feige took to the stage and revealed the entire Phase Five lineup at San Diego Comic-Con, it excited fans with the utmost hype. The announcements of Daredevil: Born Again, Thunderbolts, Captain America: New World Order, and new Avengers movies made highlights, but among them, an important project got no mention. When Marvel’s Disney+ original, Armor Wars, was skipped at SDCC, rumors spread that the show was possibly canceled or indefinitely put on hold.

But at D23, Kevin Feige pulled the curtains off the show’s status. Armor Wars will begin filming next year after post-production work on Secret Invasion is completed. Armor Wars will bring to life Tony Stark’s worst fear — his tech getting into the wrong hands. And with him gone, it would be up to his best friend and aide to ensure that Iron Man’s legacy isn’t tarnished.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Don Cheadle revealed that this storyline in Armor Wars would be straight-up adapted from the comic book series of the same name. Talking of the series, Cheadle said,

The story was first featured in the seven-issue Iron Man #225-232, written by Bob Layton and David Michelinie. Of course, the series won’t feature the exact storyline, just like other Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, which tend to go in their direction while respecting the bits from the comics. Cheadle is also aware that Armor Wars won’t be an exception and that the comic book lore will also be revitalized for his show. He added,

If you know anything about the lore, and you’ve read the comic books, you understand that it’s a series that was built around Tony’s Stark Tech getting out and Rhodey taking it on to get this tech back from the wrong hands, the bad actors whose hands it is in.

Cheadle has been portraying the character since Iron Man 2, taking on the role of Terrence Howard. Since then, he has been a trusted confidante to Tony and has helped neutralize crucial existential threats such as in Age of Ultron, the Civil War, the Infinity War, and the Endgame. We have since seen Rhodey in a guest appearance in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. He will be seen in an essential role in the upcoming Disney+ series, Secret Invasion. Armor Wars will carry forward Rhodey’s story arc unlike ever before, with War Machine taking center stage in a new war against the baddies.

As Marvel does, it’s also an opportunity to take the mythology and tip it on its head a little bit and come up with different ways to tell the story, so it’s doing that and has done that in spades.

In the interview, the actor also shed some light on how the series will impact his character’s storyline. Cheadle revealed that Armor Wars would probably help the audience learn more about Rhodey’s backdrop and allow them to dive with him in his new arc. He said:

It would be a perfect opportunity to see War Machine in action, get further into his background, and see him making another of his classic hero stories to tell at future parties.

Armor Wars will begin production in 2023. The series has been put off the Phase Five slate of the MCU, meaning the show will take place somewhere in Phase Six, making it closer to the culmination of The Multiverse Saga.
