Peacock’s original miniseries Dr. Death was a surprising hit for the streaming service, featuring a morbid story of medical malpractice based on real events. Inspired by the podcast of the same name, it followed the story of Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson), an inept surgeon infamous for systematically mutilating a litany of patients and killing two as they were under the knife. As this goes on, fellow doctors Randall Kirby (Christian Slater) and Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) try to put a stop to him. This is done with the help of a lawyer, Michelle Shugart (AnnaSophia Robb), who aims to put Duntsch away for murder.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

It remains one of Peacock’s most notable original series, making it prime material for a sequel. Luckily, according to a report by Variety, a second season of Dr. Death is confirmed to be in production. While we won’t be following the prison life of Christopher Duntsch, we’ll instead be treated to a brand-new story of medical mutilation.

This is everything we know about season two of Dr. Death.

Dr. Death Season 2: The Plot

     Peacock

As the original podcast is a seasonal anthology, the second season of Dr. Death will follow a brand-new story. Per Variety’s report, the plot synopsis for Dr. Death season two is as follows:

This is in line with the original podcast. While the first season primarily featured Duntsch being tailed by Kirby and Henderson, it appears that season two will focus more on the relationship between Macchiarini and Alexander. The “group of doctors halfway across the world” implies a level of globetrotting that wasn’t seen in the first season, widening the scope of the series and potentially taking us globetrotting. Whether those doctors will be a returning Kirby and Henderson remains to be seen.

“Season 2 will tell the story of Paolo Macchiarini, a charming surgeon renowned for his innovative operations that earn him the nickname ‘Miracle Man.’ When investigative journalist Benita Alexander approaches him for a story, the line between personal and professional begins to blur, changing her life forever. As she learns how far Paolo will go to protect his secrets, a group of doctors halfway across the world make shocking discoveries of their own that call everything about the ‘Miracle Man’ into question.”

Dr. Death Season 2: The Cast and Crew

As of writing, information regarding the cast and crew of Dr. Death season two remains limited. However, the casting for the season’s leads – Paolo Macchiarini and Benita Alexander – has been officially announced.

According to Variety, the role of Paolo Macchiarini will be played by Edgar Ramirez. The Venezuelan actor had a leading role in season two of FX’s American Crime Story, playing the famous fashion icon Gianni Versace. He has also played multiple roles across Jungle Cruise, The Last Days of American Crime, and The Undoing. Based on his performances in previous crime-themed shows, he’ll likely excel in playing a conniving, malicious doctor.

Benita Alexander will be played by Mandy Moore, who’s had a notable track record in recent years with performances in This is Us and Tangled. The actress is also notable for her musical career, producing seven albums from 1999 all the way to 2022, with her debut album, So Real, being certified platinum.

The showrunner for the first season, Patrick Macmanus, will now sit as executive producer for the second season. Macmanus was originally an executive producer for the SyFy series Happy!, a darkly-comedic series based on the graphic novel of the same name. He’ll be passing the reigns onto Ashley Michel Hoban, who also worked with Macmanus on Happy! in addition to serving as a producer for the first season of Dr. Death.

The first four episodes will be directed by returning director Jennifer Morrison, famous for her roles as Dr. Cameron on House M.D and as Emma Swan on Once Upon a Time. The last four episodes will be directed by Laura Belsey, who’s had quite a prolific filmography, directing multiple episodes of The Walking Dead, Arrow, and Criminal Minds, among other projects.

Release Date

Unfortunately, there is currently no release date for season two of Dr. Death. As of now, we can expect the series to air sometime in 2023.

Dr. Death Season 2: Everything Else

Should the series continue past season two, we already have an idea of what to expect from the third season. Season two of the show is actually based on season three of the podcast.

Season two of the podcast follows Farid Fata, an oncologist who fraudulently prescribed chemotherapy in situations where it wasn’t warranted. It’s possible that the show skipped season two of the podcast to keep in line with the surgery theme the series has established or because the story of Paolo Macchiarini translates better to a dramatic adaptation. Either way, we have a potential basis for a third season should the show maintain its success.
