It is no secret that Warner Bros. are very interested in developing new content for HBO Max from their extensive list of IPs, with The Batman and other DC stories very much at the forefront of that. However, Dune director Denis Villeneuve doesn’t want everyone to forget that a spin-off series based on his sci-fi epic is also still in development, and has confirmed that Dune: The Sisterhood is still very much “moving forward” as an HBO Max exclusive, although he was unable to give any more details than that.
Dune released in 2021 and despite circumstances, the film proved to be successful enough for Warner Bros. to give Villeneuve the green light to continue the saga in Dune: Part Two, which is expected to debut in October next year and will feature expanded roles for the likes of Zendaya and Javier Bardem as the epic story concludes. For fans of the franchise though, that is clearly not the end of the story at all.

While Villeneuve is not directing the series, he did give mention to it during a recent interview with Deadline where he explained that his focus is now centered on his Dune sequel, which could possibly spawn another sequel if he is allowed to delve further into author Frank Herbert’s world. In his Deadline interview, Villeneuve said:
With the future of the franchise obviously resting mainly on Dune: Part Two, it is not surprising that the film is getting all of Villeneuve’s attention right now.
Dune: Part Two Will Conclude One Story, But Could Open The Door on Another
Warner Bros. Pictures
Before the arrival of Dune in theaters last year, the long delayed movie had a lot of expectation resting on it. With the story having already been made into a commercial flop in the 80s by director David Lynch, Dune’s latest adaptation could well have become an expensive dud for Warner Bros. especially when considering the issues being faced by cinemas at the time of its release, and the additional headache of the movie being released on HBO Max at the same time. However, Dune ended on a box office heap of $400 million, and that seems to have been enough of a sign to ensure that Dune: Part Two will not be the final journey into the franchise.
Villeneuve has said in previous interviews that he would like to make the next book in the Dune novel series, Messiah, if his is given the chance. While a lot of the future beyond Dune: Part Two is going to be reliant on the film repeating the success of its predecessor, it does now look like we will at least be getting The Sisterhood TV series, which originally had Jon Spaihts as showrunner until his departure from the project quite early, leaving the show in limbo. Last year it was announced that the series was hoping to bring in Diane Ademu-John as a replacement, but there has been little mentioned about the show since. This update from Villeneuve will certainly come as a welcome one for fans of the sci-fi franchise, even if there is still a long way to go before the series makes it to screens.
