Many DC fans have noted that since the cancellation of Henry Cavill’s Superman return, Dwayne Johnson has been very quiet on the subject of this and Black Adam’s future as part of the DCU. After responding to a number of claims that he unfollowed Black Adam and Warner Bros. accounts on Instagram, Johnson has now finally given his in depth view of where Black Adam now stands in the franchise. Following a conversation with James Gunn, this is what Johnson had to say.

“I wanted to give you a long-awaited Black Adam update regarding the character’s future in the new DC Universe. James Gunn and I connected and Black Adam will not be their first chapter of storytelling. However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.

James and I have known each other for years and have always rooted for each other to succeed. It’s no different now, and I will always root for DC (and Marvel) to win and WIN BIG. You guys know me, and I have very thick skin – and you can always count on me to be direct with my words. These decisions made by James and DC leadership represent their vision of DCU through their creative lens.

After 15 years of relentless hard work to finally make Black Adam, I’m very proud of the film we delivered for fans worldwide. I will always look back on the fan reaction to Black Adam with tremendous gratitude, humility and love. We did great. To my very passionate and vocal Black Adam/Super Hero genre fans – I love you, THANK YOU, and I will ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOU and do my best to deliver and entertain you.”

Will Black Adam Actually Return To the DCU?

Despite Johnson’s seemingly hopeful outlook for Black Adam to make some kind of future appearance in the DC Universe, his message does sound like a sign off from the character. If Black Adam does return, it is clear that is it not going to be as the driving narrative force that he originally planned.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Black Adam’s theatrical release may not have delivered quite the kind of box office that many hoped, but its recent release on HBO Max saw the anti-hero immediately become the top movie on the platform. The win for the movie may be a small consolation, but once again suggests that there are many movies that fans would rather wait to see on the small screen than venturing out it cinemas.

However, fans of Johnson shouldn’t be too disheartened as the actor is already thundering into promotion for his upcoming Apple TV+ movie Red One, and has plenty of other projects such as sequels to Red Notice, Jungle Cruise and Jumanji all fighting for his attention. Although the big DC dream may be all but over, the Dwayne Johnson bandwagon continues to roll on.
