Black Adam spoilers ahead!
There seems to be one rule that Hollywood is starting to abide by more and more — what Dwayne Johnson wants, he gets. That seems to be especially true when it comes to his foray into the DCEU as Black Adam, as not only has the former wrestler and mega audience-puller managed to pull strings in order to get Black Adam his own movie but went around DC Films’ head in order to secure the much talked about major cameo that happens in the movie.
There have been plenty of rumors about Black Adam featuring an appearance by Henry Cavill’s Superman, who has been missing from the DCEU for some time if you discount the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. But now it has been all but officially confirmed after The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Johnson had to go to some lengths in order to make sure the return of Cavill happened on his watch.
The report suggests that DC Films boss Walter Hamada, whose time in the role is said to be ending this month, originally threw out the idea of bringing Cavill’s Superman back. That led Johnson to bypass him and go straight to Warner Bros. heads Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca, who instantly were on board with the DCEU crossover. The report goes on to say that filming of the post-credits scene was completed in September after “furious” negotiations. This could explain why there had been so little leaked previously about Cavill’s involvement in the movie or, indeed, the DCEU’s future.
Henry Cavill’s DCEU Future Now Seems Certain and He Will Reportedly Appear in The Flash
Warner Bros. Pictures
Until just a couple of months ago, Henry Cavill didn’t seem to know where his future as Superman lay. In numerous interviews, the actor frequently said that he would love to return to the role but had no idea if and when it would happen. In some interviews, it even sounded like he had completely given up on donning the red cape once more.
That now seems to have changed, as along with his teasing post-credit scene in Black Adam, the actor is also said to have filmed scenes for The Flash. One thing that is certain is that much of this all seems to have come from the arrival of Dwayne Johnson, and has only been possible due to the numerous delays that many upcoming DC movies have been hit within the last couple of years. While it could be easy to think that, like Marvel Studios, all of this is something that has been planned for a long while, the recent upheaval within the DCEU coming from the Warner Bros. merger with Discovery, makes it clear to see that is not the case.
Now that Dwayne Johnson seems to have positioned himself as a Svengali of the DCEU’s future, if not directly its leader, and appears to have the ear of some important people at the studio, it looks like Johnson’s original claims of Black Adam coming to “change the hierarchy” of the DCEU may not have been the exaggeration it originally sounded like.
