Action movie superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons pump iron in the latest look at Red One, with several new images revealing that Simmons will star as a superhero-esque version of Saint Nick. Led by Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson and Captain America: The First Avenger himself, Chris Evans, Red One promises to be “a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre.” You can check out the latest images below.

Taking to social media to share the images from the upcoming festive action outing, Simmons’ Santa is clearly ready for action as he works out alongside Johnson’s mysterious character, lifting a monstrous amount of weight in preparation for the holidays. “Ladies, gentlemen & children of all ages,” Johnson says in a caption alongside this latest look at Red One, “the coolest, strongest, kindest, most bad ass, most loving & most OG Santa Claus of all time.”

Sporting a large, white beard and a largely red ensemble, Simmons’ Santa Claus has traded in the classic round little belly that shakes like a bowl full of jelly for a set of impressive biceps. Biceps that will come in handy when lifting that sack of presents onto his sleigh and fighting bad guys in Red One.

These are from the first images Johnson shared from the filming of Red One, with the action star showing several looks at himself alongside his co-star Chris Evans. Little has been revealed regarding the plot of Red One, but we can safely assume that it will involve Johnson and Evans coming together to save Christmas. But with more explosions. Johnson recently teased the tone of Red One, comparing the movie to several of his own hit films alongside a few holiday classics. “Think JUMANJI meets MIRACLE ON 34TH ST meets HOBBS & SHAW with a dash of HARRY POTTER and sprinkled on top with my all time favorite Christmas movie, ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE… let all that sink in,” he said.
Directed by Jake Kasdan, with a script written by Chris Morgan, and from an original story by Hiram Garcia, Red One stars Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Lucy Liu (Kill Bill), Mary Elizabeth Ellis (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Nick Kroll (Don’t Worry Darling), Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones), and Wesley Kimmel (The Book of Boba Fett), alongside Johnson and Evans, with J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Whiplash) starring as Santa Claus and Bonnie Hunt (Jumanji, Toy Story 4) starring as Mrs. Claus.
Red One is scheduled to be released exclusively on Prime Video just in time for the 2023 holiday season, with the movie being planned as the first outing in a potential franchise for the streaming platform.
