The Shrek franchise is going through a bit of a renaissance thanks to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the second film that follows the adventures of the character played by Antonio Banderas and the sixth installment in the entire film saga. Even with the recent release, it’s been 10 years since we saw the original protagonists of the story, but they could soon return.
Thanks to The Last Wish’s open ending, the possibility of a new Shrek movie or seeing everyone again in Puss in Boots 3 seems more present than ever. And there is one of the protagonists more than willing to return.
Eddie Murphy, who lent his voice to the unforgettable Donkey. In an interview with etalkctv, the actor commented that he would be more than willing to return to the franchise:

There’s no doubt that Donkey is the funniest, freshest, and most inventive of the Shrek characters, with some of the most memorable lines in the entire series. The idea of a character-focused spin-off was surely an option for DreamWorks, so the possibility of it happening in the future shouldn’t be ruled out.
“Oh, I would be absolutely open. If they came to me with another Shrek, I would do it in two seconds. I love Donkey. You know, they made Puss in Boots movies, and I was like, ‘They should have made a Donkey movie. The donkey is more fun than puss in boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots but he’s no funnier than Donkey.”
Puss in Boots: The Revival of Shrek
Universal Pictures
Despite being permanently on the lips of its fans and being remembered by many as the funniest animated movie of the last few decades, there seemed to be no hope for the Shrek franchise to return. However, more than 10 years after the premiere of the first installment of Puss in Boots and four years after the end of its animated series, the return of the character meant a new life for the brand.
In the finale of The Last Wish, the main cat, Kitty, and their new friend, Perrito, escape from the dark forest to venture to a more than familiar place: Far Far Away, and the protagonist claims that he will visit some old friends. It is unknown if that meeting will take place in the third part, if there will be a fifth installment of Shrek, a new television series, or the spin-off of some other popular character.
