With his substance abuse issues years in the past, former child star Edward Furlong is picking his film career back up. As a teenager, Furlong was one of the most popular rising stars in Hollywood with his memorable roles in movies like Terminator II: Judgement Day and American History X. But drugs and alcohol entering the picture had resulted in years of personal struggles and issues with the law, including multiple drug-related arrests.

In recent years, Furlong’s acting career had slowed down considerably. He had a special appearance of sorts in the 2019 film Terminator: Dark Fate, but this was by way of digitally inserting his face onto a stand-in. Furlong has not appeared in a movie since, but that will be changing very soon. In a new interview with the Daily Mail, Furlong reveals that he recently wrapped up filming in Texas on the Brad Keller movie Charlie’s Horse.

In the interview, the actor also said how this gig came after finally getting clean, noting he has been completely sober for the past four years. Furlong explained how much better it felt to be on a movie set while sober, making the difficult journey into staying clean that much more worth it. He’s hoping that this will lead to more roles coming his way as he loves acting. As Furlong put it:

Edward Furlong Is Looking Forward to Celebrating Five Years of Sobriety

Edward Furlong became a household name after he appeared in Terminator II. The overnight stardom had made Furlong popular in Hollywood, and looking back, the former child star feels that he wasn’t at all prepared for it. He says he didn’t really have anyone watching out for him at the time and found partying to be the only way that he ever really felt like he fit in with his contemporaries, which made it too easy to fall into a life of addiction.

In 2017, Furlong was ordered by a judge to attend a six-month drug rehab program or he’d otherwise have to spend 36 months on probation. He wound up spending a year at a rehab center in California, and after coming out of the experience clean, he’s managed to stay sober ever since. Furlong describes getting sober as his greatest accomplishment and anticipates reaching his fifth year of sobriety.

Furlong says that years of chronic meth use had severely damaged his teeth. He recently had his teeth replaced and says this helped him feel like he had a second chance, as prior to the operation, he had been reminded of his struggles every time he saw himself in the mirror. With his new set of teeth and having been back on set to find new work as an actor, Furlong feels better than he has in years and is looking forward to seeing what the future holds.
