In a new sketch from Saturday night’s edition of Saturday Night Live, the cast failed to stay in character thanks to Ego Nwodim’s struggles with a way-too-well-done steak. The sketch features guest host Pedro Pascal as a dinner guest, present to celebrate a birthday with his friend Shayna (Punkie Johnson). She’s brought along her younger sister, Lisa from Temecula (Nwodim), who has ordered her steak “extra, extra well done.” The sketch goes off without a hitch up to a certain point, with Pascal and the others not so much as cracking a smile.

That takes a turn once Nwodim starts cutting into the rock-hard steak. Her sawing shakes the table excessively, causing the group’s food and drinks to spill all over the table and the floor. Pascal attempts to move on with his character’s dialogue, trying not to sell the shaking table, but it’s not long before he completely loses it, cracking up with laughter. His laughter is infectious as it causes a chain reaction, getting the SNL stars to start breaking character as well. For her part, Nwodim holds up very well, staying in character as Lisa as she saws into a steak with one leg on the table.

In another moment, cast member Bowen Yang, playing another dinner guest, is also seen completely breaking. When a waiter approaches the table to let the group know there have been some complaints, Nwodim asks, “Oh, because we’re Black?” That cracks up Yang so much he’s forced to drop his fork and cover his face in a vain attempt to stifle his laughter. The reaction finally gets to Nwodim herself, who lets a few chuckles through while delivering her next lines. Meanwhile, the studio audience is laughing all along, perhaps enjoying the sketch moreso with the breaking than they would have otherwise.

Perhaps Pedro Pascal Will Return to SNL

     NBC

This was the guest hosting debut for Pedro Pascal, who was joined by musical guest Coldplay. The actor and star of The Mandalorian was praised by fans with his performance, with one Super Mario-themed parody of The Last of Us standing out as one of the more popular sketches. While he’s been impressing critics with his dramatic performance in The Last of Us, Pascal seems to have done rather well with his turn on SNL, even with breaking character in the above sketch, so perhaps we’ll see him back on the show soon enough.

You can stream the new episode with Pascal, along with previous episodes of SNL, on Peacock. The show will return on Feb. 25 with guest host Woody Harrelson and musical guest Jack White.
