Even five weeks after its premiere, Top Gun: Maverick is not showing any signs of slowing down as it looks to claim the domestic box office crown again. However, the Tom Cruise blockbuster will face tough competition from Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which is on track to top the charts with a $31 million opening. Elvis is receiving positive reviews and is the biography of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, one of the greatest singers of all time. There was never any doubt the film would perform well at the box office, but Elvis is off to a better-than-expected start.

As for Top Gun: Maverick, the action blockbuster is just days away from crossing the $1 billion mark and is projected to gross $30 million stateside this weekend. That would make Top Gun: Maverick only the second film to register a $30 million-plus fifth weekend, with the first one being Avatar. Top Gun: Maverick also pulled in over $40 million in its fourth weekend, a feat only three other movies have ever managed to achieve, namely Avatar, Black Panther, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Paramount is also re-releasing Top Gun: Maverick on select IMAX screens this week, which were previously occupied by Jurassic World Dominion and Disney-Pixar’s Lightyear. Surprisingly, both those films have turned out to be massive disappointments. And though Jurassic World Dominion will at least turn in a moderate profit, Lightyear is likely to fall short of even recouping its $200 million budget.

Deadline reports that Jurassic World Dominion will add $26 million to its domestic haul this week for a total of $300 million, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of the year behind The Batman. And coming in fourth place on this weekend’s charts is Universal and Blumhouse’s horror-thriller The Black Phone, with $23 million. Directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Doctor Strange) and starring Ethan Hawke, The Black Phone is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an equally good audience score. Lightyear will take fifth place with a dismal $18 million second weekend haul, even though Disney has managed to secure the most number of screens for the film.

Elvis Has Received An Impressive A- CinemaScore Rating

     Warner Bros.

Elvis has been graded A- by CinemaScore, the same rating as Jurassic World Dominion and two points lower than Top Gun: Maverick’s perfect A+. Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby) is known for his divisive style that viewers either love or hate with a passion, and Elvis is no different, although it does attempt to be a crowdpleaser. However, the charisma of Austin Butler as Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks as Colonel Parker is enough to entice audiences.

Plus, Elvis Presley’s family has endorsed the film, with Priscilla Presley praising Austin Butler’s performance as “outstanding.” Elvis is currently sitting at a 79% fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating, and while it won’t be playing like 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody, the film is expected to go down as one of this year’s biggest hits. Elvis also stars Olivia DeJonge, Helen Thomson, Richard Roxburgh, Dacre Montgomery, Luke Bracy, Xavier Samuel, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Elvis is playing in theaters worldwide.
