A stylish new teaser for director Baz Lurhmann’s upcoming biographical musical drama about rock and roll icon Elvis Presley, aptly titled Elvis, reveals our best look yet at Once Upon a Time in Hollywood… star Austin Butler in the title role. Looking as glitzy, glamorous, and epic as one would expect from a story about Elvis, but with an ominous mystery bubbling underneath, Baz Lurhmann promises that “I’ll have a trailer to share with you all on Thursday…”

The wider plot of Elvis is largely unknown at present, but it is expected, and teased in this latest footage, that the movie will chronicle the life and career of rock-and-roll legend Elvis Presley. While Thursday’s trailer will no doubt offer even more information, it seems that Elvis will span most of Elvis’ career, beginning when he was first discovered and tracking all the way to his death in 1977.

The search for Elvis Presley was not a task that was taken lightly by director Baz Lurhmann, who searched far and wide for the right actor to play the part of such a legendary real-life character. While several big names such as Harry Styles, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were considered, Lurmann eventually landed on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Dead Don’t Die star Austin Butler, knowing almost instantly that he found the right actor to step into the blue suede shoes of Elvis Presley.

“I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right, and we searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist,” Luhrmann explained. “Throughout the casting process, it was an honor for me to encounter such a vast array of talent. I had heard about Austin Butler from his stand-out role opposite Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway, and through a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures.”

Academy Award winner and beloved Hollywood institution Tom Hanks will star alongside Austin Butler. Hanks will portray Elvis’ long-time manager, Colonel Tom Parker, a Dutch-born musical entrepreneur who discovered the unknown Elvis Presley in 1955.

The rest of the supporting cast will be made up of Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley, Yola Quartey as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Luke Bracey as Jerry Schilling, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as B.B. King, Dacre Montgomery as Steve Binder, Helen Thomson as Gladys Presley, Elvis’s mother, Richard Roxburgh as Vernon Presley, Elvis’s father, David Wenham as Hank Snow, Alton Mason as Little Richard, and Natasha Bassett as Dixie Locke.

Directed by Baz Luhrmann from a screenplay written by Luhrmann, Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner, with a story by Luhrmann and Doner, Elvis is scheduled to be released on June 24, 2022 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
