Emilia Clarke is returning to the big screen with a lead role in the upcoming film An Ideal Wife. Variety first reported the news, revealing Clarke’s role as Constance Lloyd, the Irish author, and wife of Oscar Wilde. Plot details surrounding the film are scarce for now; however, Variety shared a few bits of information regarding An Ideal Wife and the story it hopes to tell.
The film will follow Lloyd, known for her work as an author and feminist, campaigning for the dress reform movement that sought to do away with the Victorian dresses that were still common in the late 1800s. Lloyd and Wilde were married in 1884, raising two children during their time together. However, Wilde eventually came out as gay, which was illegal in the United Kingdom at the time. As a result, he was forced to serve time in prison, leading to Lloyd moving to Switzerland with her children to distance themselves from the situation.

An Ideal Wife comes from filmmaker Sophie Hyde, who has plenty of experience in the industry. Hyde has several feature films to her name, including 52 Tuesdays, Animals, and most recently, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. Unfortunately, An Ideal Wife is likely a few years away from release, as the project is just beginning to round out its cast.

It’s been a few years since fans have seen Emilia Clarke, as the actress has been noticeably absent since 2019. That year, Clarke wrapped up her time on Game of Thrones as Daenerys Targaryen with the final season, a role she had held since 2011. After her time on the popular HBO fantasy series, the actress turned to the big screen, where she starred in Above Suspicion alongside Jack Huston, Sophie Lowe, and Johnny Knoxville.
Then, in the same year, she appeared as Kate in Last Christmas with Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, and Emma Thompson. Earlier this year, Clarke opened up about some health scares, including two brain aneurysms that left her with parts of her brain “missing.” She has since taken some time away from the spotlight after years of attention and fame with her various roles in film and television.
Clarke has a significant role coming up in the near future, as she’s joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Secret Invasion. The Disney+ series will follow Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as he teams up with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) to try and stop the Skrulls, who have infiltrated high-ranking and powerful positions within the world of the MCU. Fans can’t wait to welcome the actress back when she appears in Secret Invasion and her upcoming film An Ideal Wife.
