Emily Blunt has set the record straight about her recent Tom Cruise story. Earlier this week, the actress recounted a memory of working with Cruise on the action movie Edge of Tomorrow in 2014, when the Top Gun: Maverick star told her to “stop being such a p***y.” The actress caught up with E! News and slammed the way some reports have suggested the actress was offended by Cruise’s harsh words. She said:

It is not unusual for celebrity stories to be taken out of context. However, when such quotes are being printed as they are said, many readers on social media are happy to make up their own interpretations and share them online. It seems that as far as Blunt is concerned, there was nothing wrong at all with Cruise’s rant, and she shared the story as a funny aside rather than expecting it to take on a life of its own.

“It’s ludicrous that it’s being spun as something that offended me. It didn’t. I shared the story as lightheartedly as it was meant by Tom. I absolutely adore Tom, he’s a dear friend and he was a total gem to me. It was said as a joke to make me laugh, which it did in a big way. And it’s still something we laugh about to this day.”

What Happened Between Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt on the Edge of Tomorrow Set?

Essentially, the incident that Blunt felt she needed to clarify happened when she was filming Edge of Tomorrow with Cruise and was having a rough time thanks to the excessively heavy suit she was required to wear. She explained during an appearance on the Smartless podcast that the movie’s practical effects resulted in her donning an 85-pound robotic suit, which was so heavy it caused her to start crying. She said:

From her comments, it was pretty clear that there was never any malice or anger in Cruise’s unorthodox advice. Still, the internet’s reaction to her story has seemingly made Blunt feel like she needed to ensure everyone is on the same page about exactly how the incident went down. The whole thing was clearly a moment that stuck with Blunt over the years for the right reasons and not because she was feeling put down or offended in any way.

“I just started to cry, in front of Tom, and he didn’t know what to do. And he just stared at me and was like, ‘I know. I know. I know.’ And I was like, ‘Tommy, I’m not sure how I am going to get through this shoot.’ And I started to cry, I was like, ‘I’m just feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot!’ He literally goes — he stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, ‘Come on. Stop being such a p*ssy, okay?’ (Laughs.) And I did laugh, and we got through it.”
