MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Turning movies into TV shows is nothing new, but it’s become increasingly popular in recent years, as networks and streaming services look for ways to stand out and attract eyeballs. Event Horizon was by no means a critical success upon its release in 1997 (currently boasting a poor 27 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and it certainly wasn’t a massive commercial success, having grossed just $26 million worldwide. So there is certainly a challenge in crafting a narrative, in a longer format, that can appeal to a wider audience. There’s also the matter of expanding the story to suit a series.

Adam Wingard has, somewhat quietly, become an accomplished genre filmmaker. Some of his smaller hits like You’re Next and The Guest put him on the map. That led to Wingard helming Blair Witch, a flashy, secretive sequel to The Blair Witch Project which, unfortunately, didn’t meet the expectations Lionsgate had for it originally. Wingard recently wrapped his biggest project to date, Godzilla vs. Kong, which is set to arrive in theaters next year. Wingard also directed Death Note for Netflix.

Event Horizon, the movie, centers on a spacecraft that vanished years earlier, which suddenly reappears. A team is sent to investigate. Accompanied by the ship’s creator, William Weir (Sam Neill), the crew of the Lewis and Clark, led by Capt. Miller (Laurence Fishburne), sets off to explore the ship, which appears to have been abandoned. However, it quickly becomes clear that something evil is hiding in its corridors, and that the horrors that befell the ship’s prior journey are still present.
