There’s a reason Jason Momoa is so popular, and it’s not just his good looks. While many may see the Samoan star as simply the new bad-ass version of Aquaman or everyone’s favorite villain Khal Drago in Game of Thrones, he has been in the Hollywood scene for over a decade. He made his debut in Baywatch: Hawaii back in 1999 and has been in a variety of shows and films including the remake of Conan the Barbarian. Momoa has had many roles in both television and film displaying his acting abilities, proving he’s more than just a pretty face and a buff body. Since his appearance in Justice League, he’s garnered such popularity that people can’t seem to get enough of him.
While Momoa’s roles are scattered evenly among both television and film, not all of these are available to everyone. It’s become natural for most people to have only a few streaming services rather than pay for cable or satellite tv with all the commercials. Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services on offer and has a wide variety of both film and television to choose from. If you have Netflix and you’re a fan of Jason Momoa, these are the best of his films available.
3 Conan the Barbarian (2011)
Momoa stars as the title character in the modern interpretation of Conan the Barbarian. Unrelated to the original Conan the Barbarian movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger from the ’80s, this new iteration follows Conan on his journey for vengeance and eventually leads to the heroic tale of saving the land from ultimate destruction. The trailer reveals striking aesthetics and graphic violence that the original could not have captured. With advanced CGI, the production value of Conan the Barbarian is much higher than that of its predecessor.
If you have a hankering for some deep fantasy lore with Momoa in the lead role, then look no further. Conan the Barbarian is more than just a mouth-watering look at Momoa’s chiseled muscles, it showcases the actor’s ability to perform action sequences as well as displaying his acting skills. Momoa is keen to prove that he is more than just a walking six-pack, like the attack he received on social media for not being in perfect physical condition.
The film was considered a disappointment by the audience and critics, claiming that it failed to live up to its expectations. That said, it should be taken into consideration that it is a reboot of the original Conan the Barbarian. As a result, despite not being related to the original in any way, the films are still compared and people will base their expectations around the original film. That said, Conan the Barbarian is still a graphic addition to Momoa’s filmography that is worth a watch if only to have a look into his portrayal of the well-loved character. Recently there were rumors that a sequel was in the works, but it was just a rumor.
2 Sweet Girl (2021)
This Netflix original Sweet Girl brings out the badass in us all. In this action film, Momoa’s character Ray Cooper loses his wife to cancer because the one drug that could have helped her was taken off the market. Sweet Girl follows Ray and his daughter Rachael’s journey to take down those responsible for taking the only thing that could’ve saved Ray’s wife away from them. The plot thickens as Ray and his daughter are attacked by a hitman hired by the same company that made the life-saving drug inaccessible and the father-daughter duo go on the run as they realize their lives are in danger.
This action film shows Momoa at his strongest, fighting for his family and the ones he loves the most. While he is focused on taking down BioPrime, the company he holds responsible for his wife’s death, Ray still makes time to take care of his daughter, providing a healthy definition of the term ‘family’. Sweet Girl is one of Momoa’s most recent roles, besides his appearance in Dune and it doesn’t appear that he’s slowing down anytime soon as the filming for Aquaman 2: The Lost Kingdom has taken a toll on his body.
Sweet Girl received mixed reviews from the audience and critics. The film was praised for the choreography of the action sequences, but the complaints lay in the plot and lack of development within the characters, claiming it to be cliché. That said, Sweet Girl is still an action flick worth the watch for the excitement and the big twist at the end.
1 The Bad Batch (2016)
Buckle up for this dramatic dystopian thriller as the main character, Arlen, is abandoned in the middle of the desert, miles from any form of civilization and outside state lines where rules don’t apply. While trying to find her way out, she’s taken by a group of cannibals led by the cleaver-carrying Miami Man (Jason Momoa). With a killer cast, including Jason Momoa, Keanu Reeves, and Jim Carrey, The Bad Batch is an underrated gem of Momoa’s as his inner madman surfaces in his performance as a leader of cannibals who gets a kick out of chopping off limbs with his cleaver.
This unique film is a departure from the Blockbuster films that Momoa is known for. Unlike Aquaman or Conan the Barbarian, The Bad Batch did not have a massive budget, nor did it have a selection of well-known directors or producers behind the curtain. This Indie flick is easily forgotten as it did not receive massive publicity or media coverage, unlike Conan the Barbarian which was widely publicized and compared with the original.
The Bad Batch reviews are somewhat divided by both critics and audiences. As this film is a dystopian thriller that revolves around a cannibalistic society, it’s safe to say that not everyone will be on board with the content. Needless to say, The Bad Batch may not be for everyone, but if you liked Mad Max: Fury Road, then The Bad Batch would be a movie worth watching.
