The Skywalker Saga has since concluded, but the Star Wars franchise has shown no signs of stopping. Lucasfilm has enjoyed continued success with the incredibly popular The Mandalorian, whose third season has wrapped filming and is expected to release late-2022 or early-2023. What’s more, the studio currently has many films and television series in development. After the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in late 2019, Lucasfilm redirected their focus on Star Wars television projects for Disney+. However, they have announced they will soon be back with their traditional theatrical releases.

Star Wars has always been well-known for bouncing between different eras rather than following a linear path. That trend has continued — as represented by The Acolyte being set many years before Episode I: The Phantom Menace — with upcoming projects set both before and after the original trilogy. With so many eras to explore in the overall Star Wars timeline, Lucasfilm has every intention of keeping the fans coming back for more. The next, highly anticipated release is the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, which will feature Ewan McGregor’s return to the titular character and premieres May 27. In the meantime, here’s a look at all the officially announced Star Wars movies and series that are currently in development.

9 Andor — Summer 2022

     Lucasfilm Ltd.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story introduced many new characters to the Star Wars universe and then proceeded to kill its entire main cast. Fortunately, Star Wars has always been fictional and can resurrect a character or go back in the timeline any time they want. Rebel operative, Cassian Andor, gave his life to a greater cause when the Death Star fired upon Scarif. That was the last fans expected to see of the character. However, Andor has his own series in development, simply titled Andor, going back to the time when he was alive, preceding the events of Rogue One. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has called Andor a “tense nail-biting spy thriller.” Filming wrapped in September 2021, with Andor scheduled for a release during the summer of 2022.

8 Ahsoka — 2023

When Ahsoka was first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the character was initially met with lots of hate. By the end of the seventh and final season, she had become one of the most beloved Star Wars characters of all time. Since then, Ahsoka made her live-action debut in the second season of The Mandalorian and made a surprise appearance in The Book of Boba Fett. The fan response was overwhelmingly positive and prompted fans to demand her own series.

Ahsokabegan production in May 2022, and it has been confirmed that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni will executive produce the series. In the animated series, Star Wars Rebels, Grand Admiral Thrawn and Jedi Ezra Bridger went missing from the far edges of the galaxy. With Ahsoka still on a mission to find Thrawn during The Mandalorian, it is believed that Thrawn and Ezra Bridger will finally make their live-action debut in Ahsoka.

7 The Acolyte — TBD

     Lucasfilm Ltd. / Disney+

Lucasfilm introduced a new era of Star Wars called “The High Republic” in 2021 that preceded the films by about 200 years. The High Republic multimedia project told stories primarily through novels and comics, but The Acolyte was announced to be a series on Disney+, set near the end of the High Republic era. In a report from Deadline, The Acolyte was described as a “female-driven action thriller with martial arts elements.” Specific details about the show’s plot are unknown, but The Acolyte will be written and showrun by Russian Doll co-creator, Lesley Headland.

6 A Droid Story — TBD

In late 2020, Lucasfilm announced a new animated movie for Disney+ called Star Wars: A Droid Story. The movie will center on a new hero on a secret mission, mentored by the iconic droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO. Industrial Light & Magic and Lucasfilm Animation have been announced to handle development. There has not been much information revealed about A Droid Story, but ILM has a track record of amazing visual effects. A Droid Story looks to be a continued showcase of their hard work and talent.

5 Lando — TBD

Justin Simien, creator of Netflix’s Dear White People, has been developing a Disney+ series focusing on Lando Calrissian. While Donald Glover’s involvement has not yet officially been confirmed, it is believed that he will return to the role instead of recasting Lando again with a new actor. Glover has been a part of major Disney-related projects in the past few years including The Lion King, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Solo: A Star Wars Story. The failure of Solo at the box office did not allow for Glover to return in any potential sequels, but the Lando series has positioned itself to welcome him back to playing the smooth-talking, famous, and well-dressed scoundrel.

4 Untitled Taika Waititi Film — TBD

Taika Waititi has established himself as one of the most recognizable directors working in Hollywood. He has directed incredible films such as Jojo Rabbit and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. But fans in geek culture will remember Waititi for directing Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder, and the acclaimed Season One finale of The Mandalorian. Taika Waititi has been tasked with directing a new Star Wars film, which he will co-write with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Due to Lucasfilm indefinitely delaying Rogue Squadron, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars will likely be the next film to hit theaters.

3 Untitled Film Produced by Kevin Feige — TBD

     Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has become recognized as one of the greatest film producers of all time. Feige was a massive Star Wars fan many years before he worked on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite his busy schedule, he has found the time to become the producer of a Star Wars film. There has been very little revealed about the project, but it has been revealed that Michael Waldron will write the film. Waldron previously worked with Feige as the writer of Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

2 The Rian Johnson Trilogy — TBD

Before Star Wars: The Last Jedi was even released, Lucasfilm announced a new Star Wars trilogy created by The Last Jedi director and writer, Rian Johnson. The first film would be written and directed by Johnson, and focus on an area of Star Wars that has never previously been explored. Due to years of silence surrounding the project, and the fan backlash to Johnson’s The Last Jedi, it was rumored that the trilogy was silently canceled. However, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced in May 2022 that they still plan on eventually making the trilogy. Outside of Star Wars, Johnson has made a deal with Netflix and is busy working on a sequel to 2019’s Knives Out. His Star Wars trilogy has not been canceled, but it has been put on the back-burner.

1 Rogue Squadron — TBD

During Disney Investor Day 2020, a new Star Wars film called Rogue Squadron was officially announced. The film was originally scheduled for a late 2023 release, with Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins given the director’s chair. Jenkins is the daughter of a real-life fighter pilot which has inspired her to make a great fighter pilot film. The official Star Wars website described the film as the story of a new generation of starfighter pilots who “earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill ride.” As such, it was no surprise that Rogue Squadron was viewed as Star Wars’ answer to Top Gun. In May 2022, Kathleen Kennedy told Vanity Fair that Rogue Squadron has been “pushed off to the side for the moment” with director Patty Jenkins “developing the script further.”
