In anticipation of the first trailer for horror sequel Evil Dead Rise, the first poster for the movie has now been unveiled and teases the terror to come. Coming courtesy of the official Evil Dead Twitter account, “Mommy loves you to death” warns the poster, which also reveals our latest glimpse at Ellie, a single mother who comes across the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis aka “The Book of the Dead.” Check out the first poster for Evil Dead Rise below.
Written and directed by Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground), Evil Dead Rise will take audiences back into the iconic world of the Deadites for this fifth outing in the beloved franchise. The story begins when a road-weary woman named Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A. apartment.

The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.
While Evil Dead staple and B-movie legend Bruce Campbell will not feature in Evil Dead Rise, the actor is on board as an executive producer, and has previously provided some insight into what audiences can expect. “This one’s dark, this one’s pretty serious. Good, strong performances,” Campbell, who is best-known for playing the intrepid Ash across the Evil Dead series, revealed back in 2021. “It’s a single mom who now has to deal with this book. These days it’s more about the book. That book gets around, that book is handed around, passed along, people try and get rid of it, they try to bury it or destroy it and they really can’t. So this book just keeps popping up, so really it’s just another story of what happens if this book appears in this particular group of people’s lives and how it intersects.”
Evil Dead Rise Will Move Away from Some of the More Iconic Elements of the Horror Franchise
Total Film/Warner Bros. Pictures
Not only will Evil Dead Rise not feature the return of Ash, it will drop a few other iconic elements along the way. Whilst maintaining the sort of terror that fans of the franchise have come to expect.
“There’s no Ash in this story and there’s no cabin in the woods, and they’re two iconic elements of what Evil Dead is. But the movie does include the book and an extraordinary amount of vicious, malevolent Deadites, so I was always pretty comfortable making that move [to LA],” director Lee Cronin explained of the sequel. “It still needed to maintain some of the claustrophobia and that translated really well from the cabin into an urban environment. This is about a family in a rundown building stuck in their apartment, so it follows the same rhythm but puts it in a more contemporary space.”
Starring Alyssa Sutherland as Ellie and Lily Sullivan as Beth alongside Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher, Mia Challis, Tai Wano, Jayden Daniels, and Billy Reynolds-McCarthy, Evil Dead Rise had originally been scheduled for a digital release on HBO Max, but the movie will instead be released theatrically, with Evil Dead Rise now due to land on the big screen on April 21, 2023, courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures.
