Having last played Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2003, many would believe that Ewan McGregor would have needed a little time to reacquaint himself with his role as the Jedi Master. However, McGregor recently explained that in Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, he found it much easier to play the role than in the prequel movies. Having developed Kenobi as a much younger iteration of the character in The Phantom Menace, now the character is older and heading toward Alec McGuiness’ appearance in the original Star Wars trilogy, McGregor feels closer to that version of Kenobi.
Obi-Wan Kenobi hit Disney+ at the end of May and immediately had the biggest Disney+ opening weekend, taking over The Mandalorian and delivering pretty much everything it promised to fans. Having now come to the end of its run, McGregor has said he would be happy to play Kenobi again, and from his comments, it is clear why. He told GQ:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“Playing him was easier, in a way because I think the sort of broken Obi-Wan Kenobi, the solitary, lonely character we find at the beginning of the series, is a bit closer to Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan Kenobi than my, sort of, swash-buckling, you know, General Kenobi running on lizards and stuff. So, I loved it very much. And I’ve always got to feel Alec Guinness in my head or sitting on my shoulder, wherever he is, I’ve got to feel like him to whatever degree when I’m playing the role, and I just felt that bit closer to him.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi Could Get a Second Season
Disney
While Obi-Wan Kenobi was a resounding success with audiences and critics, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy has explained that there are no immediate plans to continue the limited series, but if the right story is put in place, then it has certainly not been ruled out. She previously said:
With Obi-Wan Kenobi originally being pitched as a trilogy of movies, there is no doubt that somewhere is the bare bones of another season or two, but with LucasFilm also wanting to focus on making Star Wars a big screen dominant force again it may not happen as soon as fans hope. However, the series finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi left plenty of avenues open for expansion in the future, and with everyone involved seeming to be more than ready to continue the stories of Obi-Wan and Darth Vader, it is surely only a matter of time before we do see more adventures for the Jedi and the Sith Lord make it to Disney+.
“Well, frankly, we did set out to do that as a limited series, but I think if there’s huge engagement and people really want more Obi-Wan, we’ll certainly give that consideration because the fans, they speak to us. And if we feel like, ‘OK, there’s a real reason to do this; it’s answering the why then,’ then we’ll do it. But we’ll see.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi is currently streaming in its entirety along with the rest of the Star Wars Saga and its spin-offs on Disney+.
