Following the film’s U.S. release in theaters in June, we have an exclusive clip to unveil from the new Danish movie Wild Men. Part comedy and part thriller, the unique film tells the story of an unlikely friendship when a man suffering a midlife crisis who believes he’s a Viking happens to meet a fugitive on the run out in the wilderness. In our exclusive clip, we can see what life is like for a Viking in the present day when one attempts to barter for items at a grocery store.

Wild Men, which hits VOD on Aug. 5, is directed by Thomas Daneskov. The screenplay was co-written by Daneskov and Morten Pape. Leading the cast are Rasmus Bjerg, Zaki Youssef, Bjørn Sundquist, Sofie Gråbøl, and Marco Ilsø. The official synopsis is below.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Armed only with a bow and an ensemble of animal skins, Martin sets off into the forest in a misguided attempt to overcome his midlife crisis. A chance meeting with a fugitive named Musa leads to a twisted trip through the fjords with police, drug runners, and Martin’s family not far behind. As an unlikely friendship develops and wildly original set-pieces unfold, Martin’s quest for manhood leads to deep and hilariously uncomfortable realizations about the presumed masculine ideal.”

Wild Men Blends Comedy and Drama

Given its bizarre premise, viewers can expect to see elements of comedy in Wild Men, but there are more dramatic moments found in the film as well. Daneskov seems to have struck the balance pretty well if we’re going by what the critics think, as Wild Men has garnered mostly positive reviews. In an interview with Nordic Watchlist, Daneskov opened up on trying to find the right balance when scripting out the film.

“It was a long writing process, it was a lot of fun but took a long time to balance the comedy with the serious stuff, but I think we did okay,” he said. “This film is a mix of all the things that make you laugh, what makes you happy, and what makes you want to go to the cinema – the screenplay was so difficult to write because every time we finished a scene we would say; ‘okay so now what do we want to see?’”

On casting Rasmus Berg, Daneskov added, “I wanted to work with him since forever really – he is such a funny guy in Denmark but he has also done some really serious stuff too. I have been enjoying his comedy since I was a teenager watching him on television. It was surprisingly easy when we showed him the screenplay – he just said, ‘Yep, let’s do it.’ He has four kids and said how it would be nice to escape to mountains sometimes. So there was a story there which he could relate to a bit.”
